About The Position

Carver County is looking for individuals to join our Detention Deputy team. In this position, you will make a positive impact every day to inmates. Under the direction of the Detention Sergeant, Detention Deputy maintains security and safety within the jail and juvenile detention center over adults and juvenile offenders 24/7. The Detention Deputy oversees and controls security functions and activities related to the care, custody, and well-being of inmates through the principles of direct supervision. This is a safety-sensitive position. The Carver County Jail is a 24/7/365 operation. Candidates must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays, and be adaptive to shift work. May be called upon outside of regular shift hours to respond to extreme emergency events.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED and three (3) years of cumulative education, internship , training or work experience in a related public or customer service field.
  • Associates Degree and one (1) year of cumulative education, internship, training or work experience in a related public or customer service field.
  • BA/BS in any field of study.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • All applications will be screened for minimum qualifications, scored and ranked.
  • The highest ranked candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be recommended for the scored oral examinations (interviews).
  • Final selection for the position will include successful completion of oral interview(s), reference checks, background investigation including CJIS fingerprinting, pre-placement physical, and psychological evaluation.

  • Candidates with corrections/detention experience will be given consideration for increased starting rate of pay.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise inmates by enforcing jail rules and carry out procedures as defined by office and divisional policies which may include; supervising inmates in their daily activities, maintaining order, monitoring behavior, responding to and attempting to resolve inmate concerns/conflicts, responding to emergencies, monitoring inmate mail and phone calls, maintaining necessary logs and reports, and performing housekeeping and sanitation practices as necessary to ensure a safe facility.
  • Booking and releasing inmates by performing booking functions of new inmates which includes; creating inmate files, fingerprinting, photographing, arranging for an interpreter as needed, recording of personal property and money, conducting inmate orientation, providing information, classifying inmates, and gathering necessary documents as needed at release.
  • Maintain inmate records by entering inmate data into computer files and submits to proper agencies, maintains detailed record of all inmate activity, account purchases and deposits, medical needs, reports and other documents to ensure that the inmate files are accurate.
  • Responds to emergencies situations utilizing necessary emergency equipment to ensure safety of inmates and staff while exercising sound judgement.
  • Transports inmates to/from court, medical appointments, other approved activities, and other institutions. Maintains security, control, and rules of conduct at all times.
  • Distributes medication and carries out medical treatment as prescribed and authorized while maintaining detailed records of such activity as dictated by policy.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.
