Detailer - CAD Technician
About The Position
At Exhibit Concepts, Detailers turn creative ideas into physical experiences. The CAD Detailer / CAD Technician translates exhibit, environmental, and architectural concepts into accurate technical and fabrication drawings used to build custom environments for trade shows, museums, educational spaces, branded environments, and other projects. This is not a traditional civil, HVAC, piping, or utility drafting role; the position is suited to someone with CAD experience in architectural millwork, cabinetry, custom fabrication, displays, fixtures, interiors, or other environments where drawings become physical products. The role is currently approximately 80% 2D CAD and 20% 3D, while Exhibit Concepts continues to expand its 3D capabilities. The Detailer works primarily with Project Managers and collaborates with Design, Estimating, Production, Sales, and other stakeholders. Projects include both fast-paced trade show work and longer-term museum, educational, and permanent-environment projects. The employee will continue developing knowledge of internal building standards, fabrication methods, and evolving CAD technologies.
Requirements
- Proficiency using AutoCAD in a professional or technical environment.
- Architectural millwork experience.
- Experience producing technical drawings that support fabrication, construction, millwork, cabinetry, fixtures, displays, or another build environment.
- Ability to read and interpret sketches, specifications, dimensions, and design information.
- Understanding of basic materials and construction or fabrication methods.
- Strong attention to detail and drawing accuracy.
- Ability to manage priorities and work across multiple projects.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to learn and apply established building and drafting standards.
- Associate degree or technical training in drafting, CAD, architecture, construction technology, engineering technology, or a related discipline.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with cabinetry and casework.
- Experience with custom displays or fixtures.
- Knowledge of plywood and common building substrates.
- Knowledge of acrylics and related fabrication materials.
- Knowledge of basic construction methods, rough framing, and wall or construction concepts.
- Experience reading and taking field dimensions.
- Experience drawing components that incorporate lighting, LED, audio, or related elements.
- Basic nesting and programming of fabrication parts and pieces associated with drawn millwork.
- 3D CAD experience; the current role is approximately 20% 3D.
Responsibilities
- Develop detailed technical and fabrication drawings using AutoCAD.
- Translate creative and design concepts into accurate, production-ready drawings.
- Review sketches, specifications, field dimensions, and related information to determine drafting and construction requirements.
- Prepare drawings for architectural millwork, cabinetry, displays, fixtures, exhibit components, and other custom-built environments.
- Create and revise plans, elevations, sections, details, setup drawings, and related project documentation.
- Apply practical knowledge of materials and construction methods when developing drawings.
- Coordinate primarily with Project Managers and collaborate with Design, Estimating, Production, Sales, and other project stakeholders.
- Review and revise drawings based on project requirements, production needs, and internal feedback.
- Perform quality checks to ensure drawings are accurate, complete, and buildable.
- Maintain organized CAD files and project documentation.
- Support trade show, museum, educational, and permanent-environment projects.
- Develop knowledge of internal building standards, fabrication methods, and evolving CAD technologies.
