About The Position

Reuters is seeking an ambitious publishing editor for its fast-paced Global News Desk. This role involves working alongside award-winning journalists in a global news organization known for its commitment to accuracy and fairness. The position will contribute to the digital evolution of the organization to stand out in coverage of business and world events. The role is based in the Los Angeles bureau and requires an in-office presence of three days per week. The position also requires working some weekend and evening shifts. The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist adept at crafting and honing stories across geographies, industries, and markets, including scoops, breaking news, quick-turn analyses, and insights. The role demands an understanding of Reuters' diverse audience, including financial and professional clients, major media organizations, and publishers, with a willingness to reach new readers. This position is for individuals ready to experiment with new story formats and tools, functioning not only as a copy editor but also as a content curator, integrating video, pictures, graphics, and text stories into comprehensive packages. Crafting sharp headlines, ledes, and nut grafs is essential, as is identifying gaps in news coverage and collaborating with news editors to address them. The role requires precision in writing, the ability to articulate complex ideas for both specialist and general audiences, and a commitment to upholding Reuters’ high standards for accuracy, brevity, clarity, fair comment, impartiality, and sourcing. The Desk Editor will work with reporters globally to produce distinctive journalism in compelling formats.

Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience as a reporter or production editor.
  • Ability to write accurately and at speed.
  • Very strong copy editing skills, including working with complex and legally or socially sensitive stories.
  • Strong digital and multimedia expertise and familiarity with the needs of a digital audience.
  • Ability to handle content for multiple audiences.
  • Strong news judgment and ability to shape a story by asking smart questions and challenging premises.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure, with the ability to make quick and sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good communication skills, strong team ethic, diplomacy and collaboration.

Nice To Haves

  • A track record in business or finance is a plus.
  • Experience optimizing stories for search (SEO) and other platforms.
  • An understanding of analytics are a plus.
  • Experience editing newsletters a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Write and edit breaking news stories from around the globe while producing clean, engaging stories at speed.
  • Copy edit longer initiative stories for a global audience that may take a few days.
  • Ensure every story is balanced and includes fair comment, alongside engaging visuals for the stories being edited.
  • Collaborate with colleagues around the world.
  • Help drive innovation for news production and new ways of telling stories.
