About The Position

The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Desk Clerk with a passion for public service to work at the Library’s front desk. This role involves assisting customers with checking materials in and out, processing library card applications, and managing library materials. The ideal candidate will work independently, follow procedures, prioritize tasks, be a reliable team player with a strong commitment to customer service, and thrive in a fast-paced environment. Additionally, the candidate must be reliable, courteous, and safety-minded, as they will be responsible for driving the library's minivan to retrieve library materials from 10 book drop locations around Eau Claire and returning them to the library. The library is looking for friendly ambassadors who have an excellent driving record, can work independently, and are comfortable in a physical setting requiring frequent lifting.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent is required.
  • Experience in general computing, hardware, software and Microsoft Office is required.
  • Excellent customer service skills including poise in stressful situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with staff and the public.
  • Ability and initiative to work independently and efficiently with minimal direction.
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately.
  • Ability to follow Library policies and procedures.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Possess of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
  • Good driving record and the ability to maintain a good driving record to ensure safe operation of library vehicles.
  • Ability to make good judgments about weather conditions, road conditions and vehicle capacity.
  • Ability to operate a van on assigned routes skillfully, safely and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations to ensure safe and timely operation.
  • Must be able to read, write, give, follow, and comprehend verbal and written instructions.
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills to communicate productively with staff and customers.

  • Experience in library automation is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist customers by checking materials in and out.
  • Process library card applications.
  • Transfer library materials between customers and shelves.
  • Drive the library's minivan to retrieve library materials from 10 book drop locations around Eau Claire and return them to the library.
  • Provide a welcoming presence for library customers.
  • Assist customers in using library services, finding library materials and understanding library policies and procedures.
  • Check materials in and out using automated library system.
  • Provide basic troubleshooting of the Automated Materials Handler.
  • Assist customers in using the self-checkouts.
  • Troubleshoot the self-checkout machines when needed.
  • Follow procedures for renewals, reserves, overdue materials, fines, and claimed returned materials.
  • Process customer payments.
  • Process customer applications, address changes, and other circulation tasks in a multi-library system.
  • Print, sort, search, process, distribute, and troubleshoot daily paging slips according to library, ILL, IFLS and MORE procedure.
  • Fill, pack, and lift courier bins and maneuver full library carts and dollies.
  • Pick up materials at off-site sites around Eau Claire.
  • Load, transport and unload materials.
  • Keep written records related to vehicle mileage and departure and arrival times.
  • Complete other deliveries and vehicle transportation as required.
  • Assist in work flow process when staff is out sick, on leave, or to enable the completion of daily duties or assigned task.
  • Contribute to an orderly and visually appealing library through the shelving of materials and light cleaning.
  • Communicate effectively, professionally and honestly with all Library staff and Library visitors, including both written and verbal communications, following Library procedures as needed.
  • Assist customers in using meeting rooms, including making reservations, checking and checking out of rooms and using meeting room technology.
  • Maintain prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly public space within the library building and grounds.
  • Contribute to a positive, team-oriented work environment by being helpful, respectful, and approachable to both staff and the public.
  • Serve on staff committees (non-essential).
  • Participate in special events or outreach, as assigned (non-essential).
  • Participate in professional development activities (non-essential).
