About The Position

Camino Nuevo Charter Academy (CNCA) is seeking a Designated Instructional Services (DIS) Counselor to join their Home Support Office in Los Angeles, CA. This role is crucial in supporting the implementation of a socially just, research-based, and innovative instructional approach within their Dynamic Blended Inclusion model. The DIS Counselor will partner with the Special Education Team and Content Team to ensure the successful development and execution of a coherent, vertically and horizontally aligned special education program. This position requires staying current with national and state research, best practices, and trends in special education to provide expert guidance. Ultimately, the role focuses on strategic, systems-level implementation of structures and strategies aimed at closing the opportunity and achievement gap for students.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in school counseling, education administration or education leadership required.
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Educational Psychologist (LEP), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) are acceptable degrees.
  • Valid Clear California Pupil Personnel Services credential required.
  • Three to five (3-5) years counseling experience in urban education required.
  • Familiarity with special education and Section 504 laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Experience with TK-12 students with a variety of disabilities including Autism, ADHD and ODD, and Specific Learning Disabilities is a must.
  • Spanish and English fluency required.
  • Ability to set goals and develop systems for data tracking and progress monitoring.
  • Ability to understand and navigate the political, social, economic, legal and cultural context facing urban charter schools and the students they serve.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Content Team, contributing expertise on Special Education and staff to inform the overall vision and strategy of the Content Team and Special Education program.
  • Analyze and identify challenges within Special Education and collaborate with the Content team to improve work.
  • Support the development and implementation of a data-driven plan for Dynamic Blended Inclusion (DBI) in grades pre-K through 12.
  • Provide DIS-counseling for students TK-12 with IEPs.
  • Consult with school staff and parents regarding the behavioral, social, and emotional needs of students, and recommend appropriate support strategies.
  • Collaborate with teachers, staff members, and/or outside service providers to share best practices and improve instructional practices.
  • Collaborate with community agencies and refer students and families to appropriate community resources.
  • Prepare IEP documents, including writing present levels of performance, creating appropriate goals, making recommendations for counseling services, and preparing quarterly progress reports.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, Annual Reviews, Triennial Reviews, and other necessary school meetings.
  • Provide informal counseling services on an individual and group basis.
  • Maintain a professional manner in all communications with students, staff, and parents/families.
  • Serve as a member of the Crisis Response Team.
  • Provide Crisis Intervention Services to scholars as needed.
  • Conduct risk assessments and threat assessments and mobilize appropriate support.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to provide tiered social/emotional support in the classroom.
  • Ensure tier 1, 2, and 3 supports are appropriately implemented for all scholars.
  • Support the development and implementation of social-emotional learning programs.
  • Support the implementation of restorative practices across the campus.
  • Maintain up-to-date, accurate, and confidential counseling files, including record keeping in Welligent.
  • Provide a safe learning environment for students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
