About The Position

This role involves drafting, field assessments, and project coordination, offering a flexible hybrid schedule with 1-2 days in the office and occasional field visits. The Design Technician II will design electric distribution projects (overhead and underground) from initiation to completion, with a heavy focus on fire mitigation, pole replacements, and system hardening. Responsibilities include creating, updating, and revising construction sketches, drawings, and joint-use proposals using proprietary GIS platforms and drafting software. The role also requires performing key utility design calculations, conducting field visits for assessments and data gathering, tracking project lifecycles, managing material procurement, and coordinating with various teams. Additionally, the position serves as a point of contact for customers, landowners, and construction crews to communicate design solutions and resolve field conflicts.

Requirements

  • 1-2 + years of experience in utility design (electric preferred), electrical construction, or civil/mechanical drafting.
  • Strong spatial reasoning and the ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, or maps.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with internal engineering teams and external customers.
  • Solid organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple project designs concurrently.
  • Comfort with a hybrid work model that includes regular field visits in various weather conditions (including winter weather).
  • A valid driver’s license and operating vehicle (field travel is required; mileage reimbursement is provided).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GIS platforms (such as GE Smallworld), AutoCAD, or utility-specific design software is a plus.
  • Candidates transitioning from construction, land surveying, electrical trades, or customer service backgrounds who are detail-oriented, comfortable with technology, and eager to grow.

Responsibilities

  • Design electric distribution projects (overhead and underground) from initiation to completion, with a heavy focus on fire mitigation, pole replacements, and system hardening.
  • Create, update, and revise construction sketches, drawings, and joint-use proposals using client’s proprietary GIS platforms and drafting software.
  • Perform key utility design calculations, including pole loading, transformer sizing, underground cable routing, and equipment placement to ensure compliance with utility standards.
  • Conduct field visits to residential, commercial, and wildland-urban interface (WUI) sites to perform physical assessments, verify existing assets, and gather critical design data.
  • Track project lifecycles, manage material procurement (creating Bills of Materials), and coordinate directly with scheduling, project management, and utility construction crews.
  • Act as a key point of contact for customers, land owners, and construction crews to communicate design solutions and resolve field conflicts.
