About The Position

The SCA’s Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for the development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions, and renovation work of existing schools for New York City’s approximately 1.1 million students. Our projects are intentionally and thoughtfully designed; positive impact design is at the forefront of all our projects. Our In-House studio is a multidisciplinary practice that is responsible for designing some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio, as well as renovation work to existing schools. Our other two studios manage external consultants from design inception to completion. Our three studios are comprised of talented architects and engineers who are driven to deliver high-quality custom-designed, sustainable, and resilient public schools. Come and join our continuing journey towards design excellence in the K-12 education sector. Be impactful! THIS POSITION IS IN THE ARCHITECTURE & ENGINEERING DESIGN CONSULTANT MANAGEMENT STUDIO. The Design Project Manager performs difficult and complex reviews and evaluations of all project design plans and cost schedules for consistency, completeness, coordination, and constructability to ensure that the project is well coordinated, within budget, and on time during the design process and to ensure that the project's design intent via project documents, is followed during the construction process.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree
  • Four years of full time work experience preparing estimates or valuations of construction projects' components; two years must be in an administrative or supervisory capacity or a satisfactory combination of education and experience.
  • Specialty technical skills applicable to the areas to be assessed or evaluated.

Responsibilities

  • Exhibits thorough knowledge of the protocols and procedures of the SCA scope and design process for both CIP and Capacity work and ensure that the consultant adheres to the protocols and procedures.
  • Exhibit proficient technical skills to be able to: assess completeness of a submittal from the consultant; judge the validity of additional work recommended by the consultant; ensure the scope and design documents are reviewed by the appropriate disciplines and departments; assess the validity of review comments; evaluate the validity of the consultant’s alternate recommendations; evaluate the need for bulletins.
  • Effectively communicates with various departments within the SCA and with other agencies and entities outside of the SCA; mainly with the consultant regarding new initiatives, revisions to SCA policy and procedures, and any other information deemed critical to the performance of their work and delivery of the project.
  • Exhibit effective oral and written communication skills to enable delivery of clear direction and facilitate interaction with other departments and agencies.
  • Reviews and approves the consultant’s milestone and completion dates, and any revised dates due to subsequent scope modification, for the delivery of scope reports, contract documents, and any other deliverables which are deemed appropriate in response to a client request.
  • Ensures that all project milestones are met and that the project is completed on schedule.
  • Identifies projects that are in jeopardy from a schedule perspective and requests from the consultant a plan to recover or mitigate the impact to schedule.
  • Ensures execution of consultant’s monthly request for payment.
  • Reviews and approves changes in the scope of professional services during all phases of work and the related amount and method of compensation.
  • Responsible for the timely initiation of ATP requests, review of consultant fee proposals, fee negotiation.
  • Responsible for providing the consultant with complete design information package including design standards, DOE requirements, survey reports, pre-scope determination.
  • Ensure that all necessary tests are requested on a timely basis.
  • Ensure that the documents are filed with the appropriate regulatory agencies on a timely basis.
  • Monitors performance of the consultant during various phases.
  • Perform Consultant Evaluations and ensures that they are performed and completed on schedule.
  • Inform the Design Manager of project status and notify the Design Manager immediately of issues that may impact the scope of work, the schedule, or the magnitude of the projects.
  • Chair project meetings, including kickoff meetings, progress meetings, meetings with the school, and quality control meetings.
  • Support the bid and construction phase needs of a project by acting as the liaison between the consultant and appropriate SCA departments in the evaluation of bids, issuance of clarifications, bulletins and revisions to the contract documents as required.
