About The Position

The Design Lead in the Municipal Roads & Highways group will play a pivotal role in advancing the growth of our Transportation Engineering practice in the Greater Toronto Region. This leadership position focuses on developing and executing our technical delivery and business plan in transportation planning, design and management for various Regional and Municipal clients including the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO). The role requires a comprehensive understanding of the TAC Standards as well as various Regional, Municipal and MTO standards, policies, and practices, delivery models, and client relationships. You will be a subject matter expert, providing technical advice to the Program Director, Technical Managers, Engineers and Designers as it relates to municipal road and transportation engineering projects, and work on a variety of multidisciplinary low to high-complexity projects, including new construction, rehabilitation, replacement, widening and/or expansion of roadways, highways and transportation infrastructure. Requirements

  • University degree in Civil/Transportation Engineering, or a related professional discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • 15+ years of experience of transportation engineering experience, including preliminary and detail design, with at least 5 years of successful project management experience.
  • Expert and thorough knowledge of how federal, provincial, and municipal design standards (e.g., Transportation Association of Canada, Ontario Traffic Manual), and industry practices and regulations are applied.
  • Advanced knowledge of civil engineering theories, principles, legislation, regulations, and technology, including roadway/highway/transit infrastructure design, construction, maintenance, traffic operations, contract delivery, and oversight.
  • Working knowledge of related fields in transportation including geotechnical, pavement design, structural, drainage, topographic surveys, electrical, traffic, environmental processes, and construction practices.
  • Good knowledge of relevant software, such as AutoCAD, OpenRoads Designer, Microstation, and AutoTurn.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and multiple simultaneous projects involving cross-functional teams within budgetary and schedule constraints.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and highly developed verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong communication, conflict management, and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain professional working relationships.
  • Experience in managing projects to deliver results.

Nice To Haves

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical advice and contribute to a team of Engineers and Design Specialists in the design, delivery, and construction support of roadway projects within the Municipal Roadway group.
  • Lead the development and delivery of Municipal Roadway and Transportation Engineering projects and execute high-quality services and innovative solutions.
  • Efficiently manage day-to-day operations of projects, including guiding the project through the design process, and reviewing project deliverables.
  • Conduct QA/QC design reviews as well as roadside safety audit reviews.
  • Lead design development on a variety of transportation engineering projects, including functional studies, preliminary design, and detail design.
  • Manage a variety of multidisciplinary low to high-complexity transportation projects, including rehabilitation, replacement, widening and/or expansion of roadways, highways, and related transit infrastructure.
  • Oversee, lead, manage and contribute to the project for the successful completion of field investigations, geometric design, grading design, roadside safety design, drainage design, storm sewer design, pavement marking and signage design, complex construction staging design, traffic management, roadway modelling, quantity estimating, utility coordination, contract drawing preparation, contract document preparation, construction cost estimate development, scheduling, budgeting, invoicing, construction liaison, project management, and coordination with clients, agencies, stakeholders, and subconsultants.
  • Coordinate with other technical disciplines across the organization including subconsultants to ensure integrated and comprehensive engineering solutions.
  • Assist in business development activities, including proposal preparation, project methodology development, work programs, schedules, and budgets.
  • Support the Program Director and Technical Managers to continuously improve proposal templates, sample libraries and trackers.
  • Prepare technical reports and documentation for clients and project management, ensuring technical excellence and quality assurance of project tasks and deliverables.
  • Stay informed of trends, developments, and advancements in the transportation planning and design field to maintain technical competency and provide state-of-the-art services and advice to clients.
  • Nurture and grow client and industry partner relationships to support business growth.
  • Mentor junior staff and perform other responsibilities as appropriate for the position.
