About The Position

The Design Inspector creates digital drawings, surveys construction sites, inspects new and replaced water main installations, locates water mains and valve boxes, and creates encroachment permits and work orders. This role involves conducting inspections of water line installations to ensure compliance with system specifications, testing valve boxes and flows, and surveying new sites for potential water main placement. The inspector also collects survey-grade GPS data for new water taps and meters, creates drawings to represent this data, and locates existing water mains using various tools and technologies. Responsibilities include creating and revising as-built drawings, numbering plats, incorporating information into existing maps, and preparing blueprints. The position also involves performing related drafting and inspection work, such as preparing permits, attending meetings, and coordinating with supervisors, engineers, contractors, and crewmen. Maintaining accurate job files, updating computer data and maps, and responding to public inquiries regarding department projects are also key duties. The role requires reviewing, preparing, and submitting various records and reports, and interacting with a diverse range of individuals including supervisors, co-workers, customers, engineers, contractors, and the general public.

Requirements

A High School Diploma or GED
supplemented by some college coursework in CAD or surveying
two (2) years of experience designing and/or installing water utility infrastructure
possession of any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license
a valid level D Water Distribution Operator License.

Responsibilities

Conducts inspections water line installations to ensure compliance with system specifications; tests valve boxes, flows, etc.
Surveys new sites for potential water main placement ; conducts valve and meter surveys for county projects.
Collects survey grade GPS data, on new water taps and meters, and creates drawings to represent the data.
Locates existing water mains using variety of tools and technologies.
Creates drawings that accurately represent the location of new and/or existing water mains.
Creates and/or revises as-built drawings to indicate the location of mains, valves, etc.
Numbers plats and incorporates information into existing maps, plat files and drawings; prepares and reproduces blueprints.
Performs related drafting and inspection work, such as preparing permits, attending meetings, and coordinating work with supervisors, engineers, contractors and crewmen as needed.
Maintains complete and accurate job files; maintains and updates computer data and maps.
Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns and complaints from the public regarding department projects and plans.
Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports including engineering drawings, plats, aerial photographs, maps, work orders, job files, material lists, as-builts, inspection reports, locate orders, survey notes, test orders and results, permits, etc.
Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, other department supervisors and employees, customers, engineers, architects, developers, contractors, City/County personnel, property/business owners, and the general public.
Provides customer service and performs general office work as needed.
Conducts water pressure / flow tests.
Performs other related duties as required.
