About The Position

LearnVector is seeking a Design Engineer to design and build the front-end experiences that learners use every day. This role sits at the intersection of product design and front-end engineering, focusing on creating a cohesive and personalized learning experience. The Design Engineer will be responsible for the design language, component system, and interaction details that make a personalized experience feel intentional. They will own experiences end-to-end, from design to implementation and iteration based on user feedback. The company is a fast-moving, on-site team in Mountain View, California, backed by Coursera.

Requirements

  • AI-native: default to AI-assisted design and coding, and build automations; have an appetite for and record of experimenting with the newest AI tools for design and engineering.
  • A portfolio of shipped products where the interface was designed and built by the applicant, with the ability to discuss decisions on both design and engineering.
  • Strong product design craft, including typography, layout, color, motion, and interaction judgment to simplify complex products.
  • Strong front-end engineering skills: TypeScript, React or similar, CSS at a systems level, animation, accessibility, and performance.
  • Comfort owning front-end systems end-to-end in production.
  • Consumer product sensibility: understanding of what makes a product engaging and attention to user-felt details.

Nice To Haves

  • Early-stage startup experience, understanding the demands of being one of the first designers or engineers.
  • Understanding of brand, including how visual identity, tone, and product design language integrate across website, product, and marketing.
  • Experience building or maintaining a design system used by others.
  • Experience designing conversational or voice interfaces.
  • Experience with motion or generative work, such as real-time graphics, video, or generated visuals in a product.
  • Marketing experience, including designing and building landing pages, campaigns, or brand assets that performed well.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build front-end experiences for learners, including learning, practice, feedback, and progress tracking, implemented to production quality.
  • Create the product's design language and its implementation: typography, layout, color, motion, and the component system for the team.
  • Design in the medium by sketching in code, putting production work in front of learners and the team within days, and iterating based on observations.
  • Set and maintain the quality bar for the front end, focusing on performance, accessibility, responsiveness across devices, and interaction details.
  • Work directly with learners by watching sessions, running pilots, and incorporating observations into product iterations.
  • Collaborate daily with the founding team, including Andrew Ng, to define the look and feel of the one-to-one learning experience.
