About The Position

Ashby is seeking a Design Engineer who can excel in both design and coding. This role combines the skills of a designer and an engineer, allowing for a unique nimbleness and creativity in feature development. Design Engineers at Ashby work on challenging design problems, enhance the in-house design system, and consult on bespoke design work for Product Engineers. The role involves working on a product used by over 100,000 weekly active users and notable customers like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake. Feedback from the internal recruiting team and customers is readily available.

Requirements

• 2+ years of continuous industry experience as an Engineer or a Designer (internships do not count).
• Good proficiency in both Design and Engineering, with exceptional proficiency in the discipline practiced full-time.
• Experience designing products and shipping code to hundreds of users (even if through side projects).
• Excellent taste and execution in visual design.
• Ability to ship fast and iterate over time.
• Comfort with customer issues and investigations.
• Ability to work with minimal process and take ownership over decisions.
• Talent for natural collaboration and deliberate communication.
• Willingness to invest in tools and abstractions that provide leverage.
• Commitment to building a diverse team.
• Love of typed languages is helpful.
• Strong fundamentals (e.g., debugging, abstractions) and ability to learn quickly.
• No leetcode or whiteboard exercises required for interviews.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with Ashby's specific flavor of Design Engineering professionally, potentially through major contributions to a design system and designing/implementing features for hundreds of users with iterations based on feedback.
• Experience with TypeScript, React, GraphQL API, Node.js, Postgres, Redis.

Responsibilities

• Design and code features.
• Work on challenging design problems.
• Help others improve their designs by expanding and enhancing the in-house design system.
• Consult on bespoke design work needed by Product Engineers.
• Redesign the mobile web app, including customer interviews, wireframing, and implementing the design system.
• Build flexible, composable components for the design system.
• Improve the information hierarchy and scannability of designs for viewing candidate assessments.
• Collaborate with Product Managers and Designers on strategy and customer research.
• Take ownership of projects from research and spec writing to wireframing and end-to-end implementation.
• Participate in customer issue investigations.
• Contribute to developer tooling and abstractions.
• Improve common components like the design system.
• Utilize AI-powered tooling for tasks such as auto-triaging customer issues, suggesting fixes, prototyping ideas, generating code, and conducting code reviews.
• Participate in pair programming, writing product and tech specs collaboratively, and discussing decisions during the interview process.
• Onboard by setting up a development environment, shipping first product changes on day one, and increasing scope and ambiguity of shipped product changes.
• Participate in 30, 60, and 90-day reviews with manager.
• Receive support from a peer for questions, pair programming, and check-ins.
• Attend training sessions on culture, product, engineering process, and technical architecture.
