About The Position

Smart is looking for a mid-level or senior-level human-centered mechanical engineer to join our engineering team! The engineering discipline at Smart is tightly integrated into the full design process. Our engineers work collaboratively with designers to research opportunities, come up with original concepts and develop them into real world products, overcoming technical challenges in the process.

Requirements

2+ years’ experience as an action oriented design engineer
Human-centered approach and some experience with design thinking and user-research
Experience with CAD software (Creo preferred or Solidworks)
A love of teamwork and collaboration
Prototyping skills and the ability to communicate a concept through mockups and hacks
Excellent communication and presentation skills and desire to share what you know
Empathy. Great design is based on understanding other people, how they behave, what they care about, what they want to achieve

Nice To Haves

Bonus if you have been involved through to manufacturing and launched product

Responsibilities

Own technical aspects of the product development process, including: Competitor, technology, and materials analysis, Concept generation, Prototyping at varying levels of fidelity, Mechanism design, 3D CAD modelling, Design for manufacture, Technical documentation
Be involved with in-person and remote research sessions and co-creation workshops to understand user needs, and help shape product or service opportunities
Work closely with designers and strategists to ensure technical feasibility of concepts
Clearly communicate technical information to non-technical client teams, both verbally and in document form
Create robust, easy to edit CAD models using best practices
