About The Position

Karman Space & Defense is a leader in the rapid design, development, and production of critical, next-generation system solutions that align with the U.S. Department of War and its allies’ core mission priorities, and meet the accelerating demand for access to space. Building on nearly 50 years of success, we deliver Payload & Protection Systems, Aero/Hydrodynamic Interstage Systems, and Propulsion & Launch Systems to more than 80 prime contractors supporting over 130 space and defense programs. We design and deliver dependable hypersonic/strategic missile defense systems, integrating multiple technologies into unified, mission-ready hardware supporting demanding environments. As a Design Engineer III, you will lead the design of aerospace structures, mechanisms, and mechanical systems. You will drive concept development, perform engineering analysis, generate documentation and specifications, and support manufacturing, testing, and delivery. You will also contribute to new business development efforts and mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience and registration
• 4–7 years of aerospace and/or defense experience
• Solid understanding of multiple mechanical engineering technologies
• Proven experience leading the design of robust hardware
• Detailed knowledge of design‑based military and commercial specifications
• Proficient in SolidWorks; experienced in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
• Knowledge of CAD/CAE tools relevant to mechanical systems design
• A current U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Secret security clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain one

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering

Responsibilities

• Lead the design of mechanical structures, mechanisms, and systems aligned with customer requirements and industry standards
• Develop 2‑D layout drawings, 3‑D solid models, engineering documentation, bills of materials, and specifications
• Perform mechanical engineering calculations and analyses to validate safe operation and compliance
• Review and verify engineering calculations, analyses, and design work produced by peers and junior engineers
• Evaluate designs for manufacturability, cost, and quality assurance considerations
• Support manufacturing, assembly, testing, and deployment activities throughout the product lifecycle
• Prepare proposal materials, presentations, and support business development activities
• Document requirements, test plans, procedures, reports, and compliance evidence
• Support bench and field testing of mechanical components and systems
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance
