About The Position

The Derrickhand is responsible for working in the derrick and on the drilling rig floor to support drilling operations safely and efficiently. This position guides drill string and casing during tripping operations, maintains drilling fluid systems, monitors tank levels, adds chemicals as required, and operates and maintains shale shakers, mud pumps, and related mud-handling equipment. The Derrickhand works closely with the Driller and other rig crew members to ensure safe and effective rig operations.

Responsibilities

  • Safely perform derrick duties using approved fall protection above 3 metres. Must be comfortable working at heights, competent on the monkey board, and develop the skills required for advancement to Driller.
  • Safely perform all monkey board duties during tripping operations, including handling pipe and elevators, following proper sequencing, and ensuring fall protection is secured.
  • Under the direction of the Driller, monitor, condition, and maintain the drilling fluid system, including mud pumps, mud tanks, solids control equipment, and mud handling and treating equipment to ensure optimum drilling performance.
  • Perform all duties safely and in accordance with company policies, safe work procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Carry out miscellaneous duties above the rig floor, including lubrication of hoisting equipment, stringing of lines, routine inspections, and minor maintenance and repairs to the derrick and hoisting systems.
  • Assist the Driller with the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of the drilling rig and associated equipment.
  • Continue developing the knowledge and skills required to advance into the Driller position by becoming familiar with all aspects of drilling operations whenever time permits.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the derrick, monkey board, climbing system, and fall protection equipment. Immediately report any deficiencies, damage, or unsafe conditions to the Driller.
  • The day and night tour Derrickhands are responsible for inspecting the derrick at the beginning and end of each shift and reporting any changes in equipment condition or hazards that develop during their tour.
  • Ensure that anyone climbing the derrick is properly trained and equipped with an approved full-body harness and fall protection equipment before ascending.
  • Never position yourself outside the protection of the racking fingers while the travelling block and hook are moving. Any pipe left standing in the derrick must be properly secured before work continues.
  • Shift changes shall take place on the rig floor only and shall never occur while personnel are working on the monkey board or in the derrick.
  • Assist other crew members whenever required and contribute to the safe, efficient, and productive operation of the drilling rig.
  • Exercise Stop Work Authority whenever an unsafe act, unsafe condition, or uncontrolled hazard is identified.
  • Understand and comply with Stampede's Code of Business Conduct and Ethics in all business dealings and interactions.
  • Understand and comply with all company policies, procedures, directives, and standards outlined in the Stampede Employee Handbook and related management systems.
  • Maintain all required technical, operational, and safety certifications necessary to perform the role.
  • Maintain compliance with Stampede's Drug and Alcohol Policy and all client-specific requirements for safety-sensitive positions.
  • Understand and comply with all occupational health, safety, and environmental requirements.
  • Take responsibility for personal safety and the safety of others affected by work activities.
  • Use all required personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly and report any damaged or defective equipment.
  • Report hazards, incidents, near misses, injuries, and unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Participate in safety meetings, hazard assessments, inspections, and incident investigations as required.
  • Follow proper manual handling and lifting techniques and utilize mechanical lifting devices whenever appropriate to reduce the risk of injury.
