About The Position

The Departments of Pathology and Ophthalmology of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Anschutz Medical Campus seek a Dermatopathologist and Ophthalmic Pathologist and Ophthalmologist for an academic practice associated with the University of Colorado Hospital and UCHealth Sue Anschutz-Rogers Eye Center, Aurora, CO. The general responsibilities and expectations of this position mirror the missions of the Departments and affiliated systems, including: excellence in clinical care, medical undergraduate and graduate education and scholarship. The full-time on site position requires at least five years of academic anatomic pathology practice as well as subspecialty expertise in ophthalmologic pathology, with significant familiarity in correlative clinical and oncologic ophthalmology, including: teaching and research achievements sufficient for recruitment at the rank of Associate Professor. Additional interest and expertise in head and neck pathology particularly involving diseases that affect the eye and periorbital tissues is preferred. The successful applicant will join a group of more than three dozen academic surgical pathologists who practice on site in fully subspecialized teams. Our subspecialty Ophthalmologic pathology practice includes whole eye, eye and periorbital biopsy pathology and cytology, frozen sections and intra-operative rapid cytologic examination and diagnosis, as well as pathology analyses in other areas of anatomic, clinical and molecular diagnostic pathology. The successful applicant will also practice dermatopathology, and must be experienced in evaluating large surgical resections, smaller and minute samples from all anatomic areas. Our Ophthalmic and Dermatologic pathologists are active participants in multidisciplinary team based medicine, that may require attendance at multidisciplinary conferences, presentations at inter- or intra-departmental conferences or training seminars. Our intra- and extra-institutional dermatologic practice includes high volumes of oncologic specimens including melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, advanced squamous and basal cell carcinoma. The position will require regularly scheduled clinical and intraoperative frozen section call. The UCHealth Sue Anschutz-Rogers Eye Center provides the highest level of treatment from routine ophthalmology and emergency eye care to the training of highly skilled doctors and enrollment of patients in clinical research. The successful candidate will help bridge the departmental missions and enhance our pathology practice to provide excellence in multidisciplinary personalized care to our patients, engaged and cross departmental scholarship and teaching.

Requirements

  • MD, DO, or equivalent
  • Graduation from an accredited Anatomic Pathology Residency Program
  • Board certified in anatomic Pathology and dermatopathology by the American Board of Pathology
  • Eligible for medical licensure in Colorado (unrestricted), followed by a University appointment at rank of Associate Professor and hospital credentialing
  • Completion of fellowships in dermatopathology, eye pathology, with extensive relevant experience in ophthalmology
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and scholarship
  • Generally 5-10 years of experience practicing in a high acuity academic pathology practice and hospital

  • Additional interest and expertise in head and neck pathology particularly involving diseases that affect the eye and periorbital tissues is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Promote quality patient care through the sign out of routine and complex dermatologic cases, ophthalmologic cases, and other associated case types from UCH and affiliated clinics as well as consulting institutions, pathologists, and patients.
  • A full-time anatomic pathologist based at UCH is expected to cover (in general) 32-34 weeks of clinical service per year barring any specific, negotiated responsibilities that would decrease this commitment. The practice at UCH is anticipated to be a majority of dermatopathology, with a minority of eye pathology but volumes may vary over time.
  • Adherence to the quality standards and regulatory requirements associated with the anatomic pathology laboratories, as well as UCH and affiliated clinics
  • Ensure timely completion and accurate reporting of pathology tests associated with your practice, consultations, or translational research.
  • Consult with peer pathologists on cases as requested or required by policy.
  • Participate in the education of pathologists, ophthalmologists and affiliated non-pathologist providers through consultations, including at multidisciplinary clinics, and the application and education associated with test interpretation.
  • Train and supervise pathology, and non-pathology residents, and fellows, medical and other graduate students.
  • Engage in scholarly activities as broadly defined by the School of Medicine, inclusive of the scholarship of application, teaching, integration, and discovery.
  • Maintain exemplary professionalism and continue to develop collaborative and mutually beneficial relationships and support research within and bridging the pathology department/community and ophthalmology department.
  • Participate in the education of pathologists and affiliated non-pathologist providers through consultations, including at multidisciplinary clinics, and the application and education associated with test interpretation.
