About The Position

The VA Amarillo Health Care System, Amarillo, TX is seeking a Dermatologist to focus on researching, diagnosing and treating skin disorders and diseases. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). The Dermatologist will provide high-quality, compassionate care to Veteran patients with purpose, addressing complex dermatologic needs.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Tentatively selected applicants are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
  • Acceptable forms of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement.
  • May be required to serve a probationary period.

  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Nice To Haves

  • Board Certified in Dermatology
  • Working at Amarillo VAMC along with supervision of dermatology residents treating patients with dermatologic conditions.
  • Leadership skills to be able to complete ongoing professional evaluations as needed.
  • Experience implementing policies/protocols that are required in Medicine.
  • Experience working to improve the management of flow with dermatology patients referred from Primary Care.

Responsibilities

  • Complete patient examinations and may perform minor skin surgeries.
  • Prescribe topical medication for skin problems.
  • Perform dermatological procedures, considering factors such as type, location, size, number, and aggressiveness of skin cancer or growth, patient's general health, possible side effects, complications, benefits, cure rate of a procedure, and the dermatologist's experience.
  • Evaluate patients by examining thoroughly and obtaining appropriate clinical, laboratory, and other pertinent data to determine care.
  • Interpret and evaluate clinical data for the purpose of determining diagnosis and clinical status.
  • Prescribe appropriate and timely treatment, apply indicated therapeutic procedures, and recognize and assess changes in behavior, symptoms, signs, and other pertinent facts about the patient, modifying the plan of treatment when indicated.
  • Recognize own capabilities and limitations.
  • Be readily available and quick in recognizing emergency situations and taking timely necessary action.
  • Have active certification in BLS, ACLS, or both as required by facility Bylaws.
  • Develop and maintain rapport and gain the confidence of patients and relatives through competence and interpersonal skills.
  • Recognize the need for consultation and utilize facility or clinic specialty skills in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Respond to inpatient/outpatient consultations in a timely manner, document consultations according to procedure, and collaborate with the primary team or clinician on patient care and management.
  • Record the History/Physical and other examinations and changes in patient's status promptly.
  • Promptly report unusual incidents to the appropriate official.
  • Keep clear, accurate, and adequate clinical records current and completed at time of discharge, with the treatment plan clearly stated.
  • Be fully knowledgeable of and utilize the Computerized Patient Record System.
  • Complete and sign all progress notes and orders daily.
  • Complete all encounters daily, as this affects hospital funding.
  • Complete consults at the time the patient has been seen.
