Deputy Solicitor General/Assistant Solicitor General
About The Position
The Office of the Attorney General, Department of Law, is seeking to hire a Deputy Solicitor General and/or an Assistant Solicitor General. This role serves in the Solicitor General Unit, which oversees the state’s appellate litigation, with a focus on the United States Supreme Court, the Supreme Court of Georgia, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. The positions involve significant litigation responsibilities, including case management, brief drafting, and oral arguments. The office handles cases of exceptional complexity and public importance, challenges unlawful federal agency actions, defends Georgia statutes, supervises the State’s amicus practice, and oversees high-stakes trial litigation. Lawyers interested in constitutional litigation, appellate practice, and public service are encouraged to apply.
Requirements
- Demonstrated aptitude for legal analysis, brief writing, and oral communication
- Law degree from an accredited law school
- Admitted to Georgia bar (or willing to pursue)
Nice To Haves
- Three or more years of litigation experience, with significant appellate experience (for Deputy Solicitor General)
- Experience managing complex litigation teams (for Deputy Solicitor General)
- Judicial clerkship (for Deputy Solicitor General)
- Two to three years of litigation experience (for Assistant Solicitor General)
- Judicial clerkship (for Assistant Solicitor General)
Responsibilities
- Draft and file briefs in the United States Supreme Court, the Georgia Supreme Court, the Eleventh Circuit, and other appellate courts
- Present oral argument in various appellate courts
- Prepare amicus briefs on behalf of multistate amicus coalitions
- Review draft appellate briefs prepared by attorneys in other units of the Attorney General’s office and participate in moots to prepare attorneys for argument
- Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda for the Attorney General, the Solicitor General, and other senior staff
