About The Position

Reporting to the Sheriff, the Deputy Sheriff, Sergeant is a uniformed Peace Officer responsible for assisting with the day-to-day management and administration of the Sheriff’s Office, including court security, prisoner management, and civil enforcement duties. Working collaboratively with the Sheriff and second Sergeant, the position provides front-line supervision, training, and operational oversight of Deputy Sheriffs across court security, provost, and civil enforcement functions, within a complex and high-risk environment governed by legislation, judicial procedures, and safety standards, where decisions directly impact court operations, public safety, and the administration of justice across Nunavut, including travel to remote communities on circuit.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • At least four (4) years’ experience as a Deputy Sheriff in Nunavut or in an equivalent position in another jurisdiction with comparable civil enforcement and security obligations
  • A minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Driver's License
  • Must be able to qualify for a Class 4 Driver's License, which the incumbent may be required to obtain within the probationary period
  • Must meet eligibility and screening criteria for appointment as a Peace Officer
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Clear Vulnerable Sector Check

Nice To Haves

  • Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages
  • Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut
  • Experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Sheriff; the Sergeant is a supervisor to Deputy Sheriff staff and provides front-line instruction, guidance, and support in front-line operations
  • Trains and coaches Deputy Sheriffs, including assessing knowledge and skill competence, identifying areas of deficiency, and documenting performance
  • Prepares and delivers approved training programs for Deputy Sheriff staff, including pre-court, in-court, and post-court practices and procedures, and prepares ongoing progress reports
  • Attends court sittings as required and performs duties of Deputy Sheriff, including courtroom security, provost duties, and civil enforcement executions
  • Provides supervision of civil enforcement support services, including receiving, reviewing, and processing civil documents and ensuring enforcement of writs, judgments, and orders in accordance with legislation and Rules of Court
  • Provides front-line supervision and assigns daily duties, including coordination of prisoner movement, court security operations, and compliance with standard operating procedures
  • Ensures proper processes and procedures are followed for equipment control, exhibit procedures, financial transactions, and operational records in accordance with policy and legislation
  • Works collaboratively with court administration and management to maintain and verify court records and civil enforcement documentation
  • Responds to enquiries from the public and legal professionals regarding court processes, case status, and enforcement activities
