About The Position

Marion County requires on-site work. Remote work is not available. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is seeking both trainee and certified applicants to join our Enforcement team as a Deputy Sheriff. The Enforcement Division provides law enforcement services to a diverse population throughout Marion County, spanning nearly 1,200 square miles. Deputies work in a wide array of environments including urban and rural communities as well as the farming and frontier regions of Marion County depending upon their assignment. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be service-oriented, and be willing to work in a team environment. We are a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

Requirements

United States Citizen within one year of employment
At least 21 years of age at the time of employment (Marion County Sheriff's Office will consider applicants who are age 20, if they meet the qualifications of the position and are age 21 within 90 days from the recruitment close date.)
Possess a high school diploma, G.E.D., or 4-year post-secondary degree
Declared by a physician as able to perform the physical duties required by the occupation
Of good moral fitness, without legal conduct involving moral turpitude, dishonesty, fraud, deceit, misrepresentation, and conviction of drug and/or sex crimes.
Must possess a valid Oregon driver's license, or obtain within 30 days of hire.
Ability to hold, aim, and discharge firearm with sufficient accuracy to maintain minimum department qualifications.
Must complete Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) within first year of employment.
Final candidates selected for this position will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen, including testing for marijuana.
Applicants must complete ONE of the following academic proficiencies: Recent (within the past twelve months) FrontLine test with National Testing Network (NTN) ; OR Possess a four-year, post-secondary degree issued by an accredited, degree-granting college or university recognized by the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization under the provisions of ORS 348-604; OR Successfully completed training resulting in the award of Basic Police certification from Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
Applicants must complete ONE of the following physical proficiencies: Recent (within the past twelve months) Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT) completed time from an Oregon Law Enforcement organization or authorized testing agency (NTN); OR Recent (within the past twelve months) Physical Abilities Test (PAT) completed time from a Military or Law Enforcement related source; OR Successfully completed training resulting in the award of Basic Police Officer certification from Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).

Nice To Haves

Meets trainee level requirements; AND has eighteen months of experience as a police officer or deputy; OR any satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position, as determined by Marion County; AND Possess a Basic Police certification from the Department of Public Safety, Standards and Training (DPSST). If in possession of an out-of-state Police Officer certification, must attend and pass the DPSST Career Officer Development Course within one year of hire. Successful out-of-state applicants are hired at the Deputy Sheriff Trainee level and wage range until Oregon certification is achieved.

Responsibilities

Patrols roads, highways, forestland, and business areas in the enforcement of traffic and criminal laws; patrols rivers and lakes in a patrol boat enforcing water safety laws and regulations.
Conducts criminal and traffic investigations and interviews; gathers evidence and takes statements of involved parties.
Prepares reports and maintains records necessary for efficient investigations, crime prevention, prosecution, and office procedures.
Collects and secures evidence.
Operates radar equipment in the enforcement of speed regulations.
Makes arrests, books prisoners, transports prisoners under custody to institutions, courts, and on extradition.
Serves subpoenas, warrants of arrest, and civil papers.
Promotes public relations in a highly visible role by participating in community events/public forums, informing the public on public safety concerns, and answering inquiries regarding laws and ordinances.
Receives complaints from the community, self-dispatches mobile units, and answers general inquiries of the public.
Participates in search and rescue operations.
