About The Position

This position is for a POST Certified Lateral Deputy without patrol experience, suitable for individuals who have completed POST certification through an academy and have less than two years of patrol experience. Out-of-state applicants will be evaluated based on their agency training and Colorado POST Board requirements, and must have a CO POST Board provisional certification at the time of hire. The role involves working in the Detentions Services Division, with responsibilities including classifying and assigning inmates to housing, explaining rules, maintaining security and control, preventing violence, supervising inmate activities, directing visitors, supervising meal and service distributions, providing lobby security, operating the central control panel, preparing reports, conducting inspections, and performing other Deputy Sheriff duties as directed.

Requirements

  • Must have attended a law enforcement academy and acquired POST Certification or out-of-state equivalent.
  • Certified as a law enforcement officer by the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST).
  • Out-of-state applicants must have a CO POST Board provisional certification at time of hire.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Colorado.
  • General knowledge of modern law enforcement practices, procedures, and investigation techniques.
  • General knowledge of County, state, and federal laws relative to civil and criminal processes.
  • General knowledge of modern criminal investigative practices and procedures.
  • General knowledge of federal, state, and local laws relative to criminal investigations.
  • General knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position.
  • General knowledge of the content and purpose of legal papers and the practices involved in serving them.
  • General knowledge of local laws, ordinances, and state statutes pertaining to the commitment, confinement, and release of prisoners.
  • General knowledge of computers including word processing, databases, file maintenance programs, and query functions related to CCIC and NCIC.

  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, personal protection equipment, firearms, restraint devices, handcuffs, batons, radar units, first aid equipment, crime scene technician kits, blood kits, drug test kits, two-way radios, etc.
  • Must be able to operate motor vehicles, including motorcycles, light pickup trucks, and 4-wheel-drive vehicles.
  • Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 35 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work may involve walking, standing, running, and physical confrontation.

Responsibilities

  • Classifies and assigns inmates to housing locations in the detention facility.
  • Supervises inmates during the booking process and advises them of rules and regulations.
  • Escorts inmates and locks prisoners in assigned housing locations.
  • Maintains security and control of inmates and jail areas.
  • Prevents inmate violence, breaks up fights, and subdues combative inmates as necessary.
  • Performs crisis intervention, including suicide prevention.
  • Reviews incident reports from previous shifts.
  • Conducts cell searches for contraband.
  • May provide field training and evaluate new deputy sheriff recruits.
  • Maintains control of inmates' activities, including supervising distributions of meals, commissary, medications, and other items.
  • Supervises visitations of inmates and assists visitors.
  • Inspects items brought to jail for inmates.
  • Provides security in public lobbies of the detention facility.
  • Receives inquiries and provides information about inmates.
  • Logs and searches visitors, verifying identity and ensuring authorized access.
  • Communicates with inmates, providing information and directions, mediating disputes, and advising of rights and processes.
  • Listens to and investigates inmates' complaints.
  • Resolves inmates' conflicts and problems.
  • Makes recommendations to the Disciplinary Board or the Administrative Sergeant.
  • May supervise inmates on work assignments outside the detention facility.
  • Operates the central control center panel and monitors security cameras and television monitors.
  • Performs visual and audio surveillance of doors and activities of inmates and staff.
  • Controls outside entries, elevators, and doors, ensuring authorized entry and exit.
  • Responds to fire alarms and radio panic alarms, directing deputies to assist.
  • Transports or escorts inmates within the detention facility and between facilities.
  • Maintains safety and security of County and district courtrooms and provides security for persons within the court complex.
  • Maintains safety and security of the Minimum Security Facility.
  • Serves assigned court documents and maintains records of disposition.
  • Utilizes computerized data entry equipment and various word processing and database programs to enter, store, and retrieve information on inmates.
  • Summarizes data in standard reports.
  • Prepares various logs, forms, and reports documenting inmate activities, grievances, rule violations, behavior, hazards, criminal activity, etc.
  • Attends seminars, classes, and lectures to enhance knowledge of law enforcement trends.
  • Takes persons into custody on arrest warrants and makes arrests based on probable cause.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the assigned workstation.
  • Provides basic medical attention in emergencies, including CPR.
  • Performs other related work as required.
