About The Position

This job posting outlines three levels of Deputy Probation Officer: I, II, and III, each with increasing responsibilities and experience requirements. A $7,500 new hire bonus is offered, distributed upon hire, completion of the academy/CORE, and successful completion of probation. The core function of these roles involves investigating cases of juvenile delinquency, status offenders, and adult referrals for probation, supervising assigned probationers, and providing rehabilitation services for offenders and their families. Higher levels involve more complex casework, lead supervision, and coordination of training. All levels require incumbents to have Peace Officer status (for II and III) and meet specific training and certification requirements.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college with a major in criminology, sociology, psychology, social work or closely related field (Deputy Probation Officer I).
  • Currently enrolled in college with a major in criminology, sociology, psychology, social work or closely related field, within 6 months of graduation (Deputy Probation Officer I).
  • Two (2) years of professional probation work experience comparable to that of a Deputy Probation Officer I with Amador County (Deputy Probation Officer II).
  • Five (5) years of professional probation work experience comparable to that of a Deputy Probation Officer II with Amador County (Deputy Probation Officer III).
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Ability to complete the Basic Probation Officer Core Course as certified by the Board of State and Community Corrections for Deputy Probation Officer Core Training, and continued compliance with annual training requirements (Deputy Probation Officer I).
  • Possession of certification to meet California Penal Code Section 832 requirements regarding arrest, search, seizure and firearms (Deputy Probation Officer II/III).
  • Completion of the Basic Probation Course as certified by the Board of Corrections Certificate for Deputy Probation Officer Core Training and evidence of continued compliance with annual training requirements (Deputy Probation Officer II/III).
  • Possession of CPR /First Aid Certificate.
  • Ability to qualify for training and background which will meet the requirements of California Government Code Sections 1029 and 1031.
  • Knowledge of Federal, and State laws relating to probation work.
  • Knowledge of Modern probation casework, objectives, principles, and methods including individual and group behavior.
  • Knowledge of Psychology as applied to both juvenile and adult offenders.
  • Knowledge of Community, public and private agencies available for the probationer.
  • Ability to learn the principles of adult and juvenile probation work and of related court procedures.
  • Ability to learn the provisions of the Penal, Welfare and Institutions, Education, Vehicle, and Health and Safety Codes.
  • Ability to analyze investigation material and make proper deductions.
  • Ability to interview clients and elicit necessary information.
  • Ability to prepare and present effective written and oral reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with probationers and others.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with peace officers and related social services agencies.
  • Ability to operate various equipment such as typewriter and computer keyboard.
  • Ability to make oral presentations and training before groups.
  • Ability to prepare, review, and analyze data.
  • Ability to apply the principles of adult and juvenile probation work and related Court procedures in a variety of situations (Deputy Probation Officer II/III).
  • Ability to interpret and apply appropriate provisions of the Penal, Welfare and Institutions, Education, Vehicle and Health and Safety Codes (Deputy Probation Officer II/III).
  • Ability to provide lead supervision and work coordination for other Department staff (Deputy Probation Officer III).
  • Ability to schedule and coordinate training programs for Department staff (Deputy Probation Officer III).

Nice To Haves

  • Some previous work experience in a probation related field is highly desirable (Deputy Probation Officer I).

Responsibilities

  • Investigate cases of juvenile delinquency, status offenders, and adult referrals for probation.
  • Supervise a caseload of assigned probationers.
  • Provide rehabilitation services for adults and juvenile offenders and/or their families.
  • Conduct inquiries into the nature of reported offenses and client circumstances.
  • Interview clients, their families, and interested individuals to determine environmental, employment, financial, and marital status.
  • Prepare and submit court reports outlining pertinent information and recommending a course of action.
  • Present reports in court and answer judge's questions.
  • Develop plans for regular contacts with probationers, providing counsel, guidance, and support.
  • Hold regular interviews and counseling sessions with probationers.
  • Monitor behavior to determine compliance with conditions of probation.
  • Record contacts in case files.
  • Serve as intake officer in determining if a juvenile petition should be filed and if court action is necessary.
  • Conduct crisis counseling as required.
  • Conduct search and seizure of person, property, and vehicles.
  • Advise clients of available community resources.
  • Cooperate with State and local welfare, mental health, and law enforcement agencies.
  • Transport juveniles to/from court or individuals in custody when necessary.
  • Serve as on-call officer for juvenile problems.
  • Conduct pre-sentence supplemental and dispositional investigations.
  • Formulate plans of probation and present recommendations to the Court.
  • Prepare affidavits of probation violations.
  • Conduct individual and group counseling.
  • Serve as placement officer (scheduling visits, evaluating reports, making assessments, compiling plans, working with placement agencies).
  • Compose and dictate petitions, correspondence, and case histories.
  • Maintain Court records and reports.
  • Provide lead direction and work coordination for other Department staff (Deputy Probation Officer III).
  • Coordinate scheduling of staff for requisite training and ensure training requirements are met (Deputy Probation Officer III).
