About The Position

The Los Angeles County Probation Department is seeking motivated individuals to assist and advise youth in redirecting their behavior into pro-social channels. This role involves supporting youth through coaching, counseling, and acknowledging pro-social behavior, contributing to the organization's mission of strengthening the community. Deputy Probation Officer II – Treatment and Counseling positions are located in Residential Treatment, Detention Services, and Secure Youth Treatment facilities across Los Angeles County. These roles involve supervising probation youth, providing on-site treatment services, serving as team leaders, planning and implementing treatment programs, preparing reports for the department and courts, and facilitating small group sessions using evidence-based cognitive interventions.

Requirements

  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in a mental health or behavioral science field related to the core business function of the department. Programs should meet the appropriate professional California accreditation standards for their discipline (e.g., Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE), Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), American Psychological Association (APA), etc.). Out-of-state programs will also be considered if they are accredited by a recognized regional accrediting body and/or a national professional accrediting organization and are determined to be equivalent to California accreditation and education requirements for the discipline. Related degrees include: Social Work (MSW), Psychology (Clinical, Counseling, Forensic), Counseling, Marriage & Family Therapy, Behavioral Science, Mental Health Counseling.
  • Candidates must meet the qualifications for designation as a Peace Officer within the Probation Department, including, but not limited to: 1) No Felony Convictions 2) Work Requirement - Peace Officer must be legally authorized to work under federal law. 3) At least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Appointees will be required to meet State-mandated CORE training requirements as defined by Standards for Training in Corrections (STC) within one (1) year of appointment, per STC guidelines.
  • Positions in this class will be required to possess a certificate of completion for a 40-hour introductory training course on the laws of arrest under Penal Code Section 832 and Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
  • A valid California Class C Driver License at time of appointment.
  • Applicants must be in good general physical condition, free from any medical condition that would interfere with the satisfactory performance of the essential duties of this classification.
  • Applicants must be 20-1/2 years of age at the time of filing.

  • Some positions may require a California Class B Driver License and/or specialized endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts individual therapy to address issues including stress, substance abuse, and family dynamics, in accordance with established treatment plans, for the purpose of modifying behavior and improving pro-social and vocational skills.
  • Conducts daily group therapy using evidence-based practices, including cognitive behavioral interventions, to improve the psychosocial functioning of youth.
  • Conducts family therapy in accordance with treatment plans to enhance communication and promote positive family dynamics.
  • Provides crisis intervention counseling to de-escalate potentially harmful situations and/or high-risk behaviors.
  • Motivates and encourages youth to engage in scheduled activities and schoolwork, utilizing motivational interviewing techniques.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of counseling and treatment plans, as well as the accuracy and completeness of diagnoses, to modify plans and diagnoses as necessary.
  • Consults with other professionals regarding therapies, treatments, counseling resources, and techniques to ensure the effectiveness of each youth’s treatment plan.
  • Serves as the treatment team leader and facilitates weekly team meetings.
  • Ensures youths’ health, hygiene, and personal needs are met in consultation with nursing staff, physicians, and housing unit staff.
  • Records services in accordance with the Department of Mental Health’s standards for behavioral health services within the Integrated Behavioral Health Information System.
  • Develops individual and family treatment plans.
  • Writes and maintains progress notes and session documentation.
  • Transports youth to court or other locations on an as-needed basis.
  • Operates a single vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 pounds, as needed.
