About The Position

This is skilled work performed inside the county jail, responsible for the supervision of inmates. A Deputy Jailer is a hazardous law enforcement position requiring regular face-to-face contact with inmates and the ability to respond to dangerous situations with appropriate force to maintain order. Deputy Jailers may be exposed to infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and dangerous airborne contaminates. The position demands a high degree of physical conditioning to control uncooperative and combative inmates and manage physical and mental stress. Deputy Jailers must be prepared to use necessary force, up to and including deadly physical force, to defend the public, staff, inmates, and themselves. They will be exposed to oleoresin capsicum and other non-lethal irritants. Transporting inmates of all custody levels outside the facility requires training in the effective use of deadly force. This role operates under general and limited supervision, necessitating high integrity and strict adherence to the Code of Ethics, as well as all federal, state, and local laws and standards.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school, vocational school, or the equivalent.
  • Ability to read and write basic English.
  • Good verbal skills, ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, inmates, and the general public.
  • Ability to provide clear, easily understood explanations and directions.
  • Good writing skills; ability to prepare clear and concise incident reports and email communications.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written reports, letters, instructions, policies and procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to add and subtract, and the ability to count and verify money.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to communicate the facts in a high stress situation to the shift supervisor and assist in making sound decisions that follow all federal, state, and local laws and standards.
  • Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets policies, procedures, and government regulations.
  • Ability to respond to sensitive inquiries or complaints from the general public, inmate population, and other agencies.
  • Current State issued driver’s license.
  • Ability to deal fairly with coworkers, supervisors, and inmates.
  • Ability to use verbal persuasion to de-escalate highly volatile inmates and situations.
  • Ability to work effectively on a daily basis with general to limited supervision.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn multiple different types of software utilized by the jail.
  • Ability to get along with others in the workplace and to respect their rights and individual abilities.
  • Must be bondable.
  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Must remain free of criminal convictions.
  • Must maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Check previous shift logs and the population count at the beginning of each shift.
  • Keep a running log of all shift activities.
  • Follow procedures associated with the processing of new inmates, including: Processing incoming inmates into the jail management system, Maintaining a telephone log, Completing forms associated with processing of new inmates, Securing inmate personal property and valuables in a locked room, Placing the inmate in the appropriate housing location, Filing all paperwork associated with the processing.
  • Check cells regularly for the condition of the inmates, and the inmates’ activities as required by standards.
  • Remove and return inmates from their cell, and escort them to the appropriate areas when they are required to go to: Recreation, Medical and/or mental health services, Religious and/or other self-improvement services offered at the jail, Work assignments, Court, Attorney visits.
  • Supervise inmates on work assignments to ensure all proper procedures are being followed when preparing and serving meals, cleaning laundry, and cleaning the jail building.
  • Follow all procedures associated with the final release of inmates, including: Completing all proper documentation associated with the release, Returning all personal property and money upon release, Counting bond money and issuing receipts as required.
  • Ability to make routine computations and tabulations with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to transport inmates to a hospital, dentist, or court as required.
  • Ability to guard duty at a hospital for an entire shift as required.
  • Ability to serve and file warrants as required.
  • Conduct and supervise the various court hearings conducted via video teleconference.
  • Monitor the two-way radio system used by other Deputy Jailers.
  • Monitor the security cameras and audio speakers throughout the jail.
  • Communicate effectively with members of the public in person or via telephone and answer questions posed by them.
  • Ability to work under general and limited supervision.
  • Answer Inmate Request Forms and return them to the inmate.
  • Supply inmates with necessary items such as hygiene products, clothing, toilet paper, etc.
  • Collect and deliver mail daily.
  • Deliver canteen products to inmates when received by the jail.
  • Supervise indoor and outdoor recreation.
  • Provide emergency first aid, AED, and/or CPR to any inmate or staff member in need of emergent medical treatment and assist medical staff once they arrive.
  • Act as a field training officer for new employees when required.
  • Follow all lawful orders and directives issued by a superior ranking officer.
  • Follow all federal, state, and local laws and standards.
  • Follow all Boone County Jail Policies and Procedures, and the Code of Ethics.
  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the facility, especially staff only areas.
  • Assists Supervisors in ensuring all staff are following policies and procedures, and the Code of Ethics.
  • Cross train to gain the ability to work in every area of the jail and work camp.
  • Attend and complete firearms training to qualified to carry and utilize a firearm during transportation of inmates and hospital duty.
  • Attend and complete training involving less lethal and chemical munitions, including oleoresin capsicum. As part of training a Deputy Jailer will be exposed to these chemical irritants and munitions so they learn to function during an incident where they are utilized.
  • Attend and complete self-defense training to be used when force is being used or threatened against yourself or others.
  • Attend and complete first aid, AED, and CPR training.
  • Attend and complete twenty-four hours of annual in-service training.
