About The Position

The Globe and Mail is looking for a manager to join our visuals team as Deputy Head of Photo. Reporting to the Head of Photo and Video, the successful candidate will help lead a team charged with producing world-class photojournalism that engages readers across all platforms. The Globe and Mail’s visuals team is a multidisciplinary group of photographers, photo editors, designers, developers, data journalists and graphic artists. We work collaboratively across all aspects of The Globe’s coverage, from breaking news and daily reporting to long-term investigative projects, features and digital storytelling. Joining this team also means collaborating with award-winning photojournalists based around the world and helping shape The Globe’s most ambitious visual stories. The ideal candidate will have strong editorial judgment with a track record of creating compelling visual-first narratives, alongside experience leading and developing others. They will be a respected voice on photography in the newsroom and a strong advocate for the power and value of visual storytelling as core to The Globe’s journalism.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience working as a photo or visuals assigning editor in a newsroom, or equivalent experience
  • Previous experience leading, managing and developing journalists, teams or significant editorial projects
  • Excellent judgment for what makes a strong visual story, from technical and aesthetic details to pacing and story structure
  • A proven ability to work with photographers and editors to develop assignments and strengthen story ideas
  • A strong, confident understanding of the legal and ethical underpinnings of photojournalism in a digital age
  • An ability to evaluate and give constructive feedback on a wide range of freelance pitches and story ideas
  • Strong understanding of the technical aspects of photography and image production, and an ability to clearly communicate those requirements to other visual journalists
  • Experience commissioning and working with freelance photographers
  • Conversant on trends in digital journalism, including the role of visuals in reaching readers across digital, mobile, social and distributed platforms
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with an ability to build relationships across a newsroom

Responsibilities

  • Help lead and manage the photo team, including assignments, feedback and professional development
  • Oversee daily photo coverage across breaking news, features, major news events and long-term projects
  • Work closely with assigning editors throughout the newsroom to ensure strong communication around priority files and identify opportunities for photography-driven journalism
  • Work with photo editors and photographers to develop assignments and visual approaches from conception through publication
  • Make sound editorial decisions under deadline pressure while maintaining high journalistic, ethical and technical standards
  • Support the development of The Globe’s freelance photography network, including evaluating pitches, identifying new talent and helping build a roster that reflects the communities and country we cover
  • Help improve workflows, processes and communication across the photo team and the wider newsroom
  • Advocate for photography and visual storytelling at the earliest stages of story planning
