About The Position

This position functions as a technical expert and enforcement officer responsible for ensuring that the university's complex infrastructure complies with the Maryland State Fire Prevention Code and national safety standards. The position is responsible for performing a wide range of activities related to fire and life safety, and emergency management, including enforcement of Maryland fire laws under Maryland Code, Public Safety Article Title 6; delivering training and education; conducting fire drills, and responding to incidents. Works with most levels of the university administration, faculty, staff, and students in order to achieve a safe working/education environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Two (2) years of experience managing daily fire safety or emergency management operations.
  • Must meet educational and certification qualifications in Maryland Public Safety Article to be appointed, and maintain appointment, as an Assistant State Fire Marshal.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and jurisdictional regulations, codes, standards, and requirements applicable to fire, life safety, and fire investigations.
  • Knowledge of fire protection and hazardous materials systems and equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace products.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
  • Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service.

  • Completion of employment eligibility verification (on Form I-9) by presenting documents that establish identity and work authorization within the timeframe required by federal immigration law, and where applicable, to demonstrate renewed employment authorization.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 3 years as a fire marshal of fire inspector
  • Experience in a college or university setting.
  • Experience as a firefighter, police officer, or other first responder
  • Completion of an Emergency Vehicle Operators course
  • Completion of ICS 100, ICS 200, ICS 700
