About The Position

The City of Fayetteville is recruiting for a Deputy Fire Marshal to assist with directing, managing, supervising, and coordinating the activities and operations of the Code Enforcement Program of the Fire Department. This role includes fire code compliance activities and other related programs and services. The Deputy Fire Marshal will coordinate assigned activities with other divisions, departments, and outside agencies, and provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Fire Marshal and/or Fire Chief.

Requirements

  • Six years of increasingly responsible experience as a fire code official in a governmental environment.
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Possession of an appropriate valid driver’s license and ability to maintain insurability.
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800, 300, and NC Fire Code Standard Level III.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of administrative and supervisory responsibility is preferred.
  • Specialized training in code enforcement, construction technology, or a related field.
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in fire science, public administration, business administration is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain NIMS 400 certification.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned program and services.
  • Meet with Fire Marshal regularly to discuss future plans and progress toward goals and objectives; recommend and administer policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the selection of lower level staff; motivate and evaluate departmental personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures; work with employees to correct deficiencies, implement discipline procedures.
  • Manage and participate in the enforcement of the North Carolina fire code, which involves inspections of all applicable commercial and residential properties in the City.
  • Recommend updates to the City of Fayetteville fire protection ordinance and fee schedule to the Fire Marshal.
  • Provide guidance to staff and customers on technical matters and issues interpreting the fire codes.
  • Identify opportunities for improving work methods and procedures; review with appropriate management staff; implement improvements.
  • Assist Fire Marshal with the development and administration of the assigned division’s annual budget; monitor staff, equipment, material and supplies; implement adjustments as directed.
  • Assist with Public Information Officer duties and may assist with website contact.
  • Assist and coordinate with school district, private business, and industry to develop emergency plans and disaster preparedness in correlation and support of the City's Emergency Plan.
  • Serve as support staff for community disaster preparedness efforts.
  • Participate in the investigation of employee injuries and worker's compensation claims; process claims, damaged and/or lost equipment.
