The State Fire Marshal’s Office works to promote fire safety in Virginia through public education, risk identification, and programs to reduce fire risks. It enforces the Statewide Fire Prevention Code and related building-code provisions through education and progressive enforcement, including inspections, complaint investigations, technical assistance, analysis of fire incidents, and programs regulating explosives, fireworks, and fire-safe cigarettes.
