About The Position

This position performs a variety of administration, operational, and supervisory work in organizing, directing, and implementing firefighter training, fire education and prevention, suppression and command operations, and emergency medical responses to prevent or minimize the loss of life and property.

Requirements

  • Must have the ability to perform the basic operations of this position which includes, but is not limited to, sit, stand, walk, run, talk, hear, use hands and fingers to feel, handle, or operate hand and power tools or controls, reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste, and smell.
  • Must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally life or move up to 130 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • High school diploma/GED required
  • A minimum of five years of experience in the fire service
  • A minimum of three years of experience as a Lieutenant or higher in a comparable fire organization
  • Certified as a State of Georgia Firefighter I with Hazmat Awareness and Operations or obtained within one year of hire date
  • Possession of valid Class E or F Georgia Driver’s License or higher is required
  • Employees must pass a pre-employment drug test and a background investigation
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail in procedure and policy
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with county employees, partnering agencies and the public
  • Knowledge of computers, office equipment and reporting systems
  • Must be able to respond to emergency incidents during the week with weekends rotation for days off
  • Must be available to travel within the county and out of the area, including overnight travel, as necessary

Nice To Haves

  • Experience of 5 years as a Company Officer
  • Experience working with volunteer fire service professionals
  • Certified Georgia Fire Instructor I or Structural Fire Control
  • Possession of a valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License or a non-commercial Class E or F

Responsibilities

  • Acts as the Fire Chief/EMA Director in the absence of the Fire Chief/EMA Director, as assigned
  • Supervises part-time and volunteer firefighters in their assigned duties
  • Ensures emergency and non-emergency calls are handled promptly and properly by paid-on-call firefighters and in accordance with established guidelines and standard operating procedures
  • Directs, leads, evaluates and participates in fire department and EMA incidents to include Fire Department and EMA training events and exercises
  • Responds to dispatched emergency incidents, assumes command in the absence of the Fire Chief/EMA Director
  • Reviews, evaluates, and implements policies and procedures for equipment purchases and inventory, use, maintenance, and upkeep
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities in conformance with federal, state, and local laws
  • Assists with implementation of Department and Pierce County Policies and Procedures in order to meet Fire Department and Pierce County goals
  • Under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief/EMA Director directs the operation of the Fire Departmental day-to-day activities
  • Documents public complaints and firefighter grievances, maintains discipline and conduct, and general behavior of part time and volunteer personnel in accordance with Pierce County personnel policies
  • Prepares and submits reports, forms, records, and logs for documentation, as directed by the Fire Chief/EMA Director regarding the Department’s activities
  • Attends required training, conferences, and meetings to keep abreast on current events and trends in the field of service
  • Represents Pierce County Fire Department and Pierce County EMA in a variety of local, regional, state, and federal meetings
  • Perform the duties of command as needed and fulfill obligations during duty periods and after hours
  • Ensures operational readiness and cleanliness of 8 district stations to include emergency vehicles, equipment, radios, computers and additional inventory
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief//EMA Director or designee
