About The Position

The Outreach Team is a premier national field firm partnering with organizations to solve societal problems and build resources for impact. They are a people-powered enterprise that hires diverse teams, invests in staff, and treats them well. This role is for a Deputy Field Director to manage a petitioning operation in Salisbury, MD. The Deputy Field Director will recruit, train, and manage a team of local petitioners to gather signatures from registered voters to qualify an initiative for an upcoming election. This role is an opportunity to make direct democracy work for the community by empowering local voices and ensuring residents have a say in shaping their future. The Deputy Field Director will work within the director team to build an office from the ground up, go into the field several days per week to collect petitions, train staff, and lead by example. They will communicate long and short-term goals, manage campaign reporting, and report to the Lead Field Director. The position is hiring immediately and will run from the end of May 2026 through mid-June 2026. A strong preference is given to local applicants.

Requirements

  • Leadership experience, ability to motivate, grow, and manage a large team.
  • Eagerness to lead from the front, get into the field and petition several days a week.
  • Canvassing experience, paid or volunteer.
  • Extreme attention to detail and a proven ability to instill that quality in others.
  • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Strong passion for community organizing and fostering civic engagement.
  • Track record of building inclusive teams.
  • Ability to work long hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-3+ years of experience running paid canvasses or other canvassing operations.
  • Management experience.
  • Experience working in underserved or marginalized communities.
  • Facilitation experience.
  • Local knowledge/experience in San Diego.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the recruitment team to find and hire members of the community to work as petitioners and assist voters in carefully and correctly completing the petition.
  • Manage a team of 40 petitioners, setting and driving goals along the way.
  • Implement safety protocol.
  • Build a database of successful locations for gathering signatures from registered voters.
  • Coordinate petitioning sites for staff, and work with partner groups to avoid overlapping efforts in the field.
  • Go out in the field yourself several days per week to collect petitions, train staff, and drive office goals.
  • Build a diverse team where staff feel respected while fostering a culture of equity and justice.
  • Implement quality control measures to ensure the integrity of the work.
  • Maintain a healthy and safe working environment for all staff.
  • Train and provide ongoing motivation and support to staff.
  • Identify, promote, and train a leadership team.
  • Hold staff accountable to performance metrics and standards.
  • Work with the HR Director on payroll, onboarding and offboarding staff, and managing state compliance.
  • Monitor and train staff to stay compliant with state signature collection requirements.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of office materials, petition forms and overall office organization.
  • Manage the printing, storage and distribution of unique paid circulator petition forms.
  • Manage staff schedule.
  • Process and secure physical petition sheets ensuring compliance with legal petitioning guidelines.
  • Prepare signatures for final turn in.
  • Recording and reporting on office performance.
  • Tracking and monitoring campaign expenses.
