About The Position

The Benton County District Attorney's Office is seeking a Deputy District Attorney 1 to join their team. This role is described as a calling, focused on protecting victims' rights, promoting community safety, holding offenders accountable, and ensuring the constitutional rights of all in the system. The position offers the opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of others and learn the intricacies of criminal law through hands-on experience with a variety of cases from the outset. The annual salary range is $96,194.59 - $131,175.20, with potential salary increases at 6 and 12 months based on performance.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law
  • Able to work as a certified law student by time of hire
  • Active member in good standing of the Oregon State Bar by October 1, 2026
  • Cover letter required
  • Must have or obtain a valid Oregon Driver’s License within the first 30 days of hire
  • Must maintain a good driving record
  • Use of a personal vehicle
  • Live within a 60-minute commute of the Benton County Courthouse
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation
  • Ongoing compliance with all Federal, State and Local statutes

Responsibilities

  • Decide what plea offer best serves the community
  • Win cases at trial when negotiations fail
  • Engage in plea negotiation with defense attorneys
  • Prepare for and conduct trials, including witness preparation, jury selection, and trial presentation
  • Help the jury reach a just and appropriate verdict
  • Handle cases from review and charging through trial and sentencing (vertical prosecution model)
  • Take on more challenging cases as skill and experience advance
  • Exercise autonomy regarding cases, including making charging decisions and resolving or trying cases
  • Seek justice through the truth
