About The Position

The Nevada Department of Wildlife is recruiting for a Deputy Director. Reporting directly to the Director, the Deputy Director works alongside two other Deputy Directors who together provide administrative oversight and coordination of statewide programs including: Game, Fisheries, Biodiversity, Habitat, Law Enforcement, Conservation Education, Data and Technology Services, Fiscal Services, Engineering Services and Human Resources. The Deputy Director oversees biological studies related to fish and wildlife management, ensures development, implementation and documentation of the Department’s strategic plan; oversees operational function of the Department and acts on behalf of the Director in matters related to Department operations, activities and personnel, as directed by the Director.

Requirements

  • Seven or more years of applicable experience managing comprehensive programs involving natural resources, conservation or life sciences, with a minimum of three years of managerial experience
  • Bachelor’s or above degree in a natural science discipline such as wildlife management, conservation biology, zoology or closely related field preferred, or combination of experience and education.
  • Extensive knowledge of wildlife conservation, natural resource management, state and federal laws, public administration, budgeting, strategic planning, and personnel management.
  • Strong leadership, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to oversee diverse programs, develop policy, manage resources, and guide organizational priorities.
  • Ability to interpret scientific, legal, and fiscal information.
  • Ability to make sound decisions on complex and often controversial issues.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with all stakeholders, including sportsmen, NGO’s, producers, and partner agencies.
  • Ability to effectively supervise senior staff.
  • Ability to represent the Department before the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners, legislators, governmental entities, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Provides administrative direction and supervises staff including up to 4 Division Administrators.
  • Plans and directs the management team and strategic planning process for the Department as a team member in the Director’s Office.
  • Plans, organizes and provides statewide coordination of programs while balancing needs and initiatives of competing/conflicting interest groups.
  • Provides narrative, statistical and oral reports on program and operational progress to the Director, Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners, State Legislators and other interested parties; evaluates effectiveness of programs in relation to established outcome measures.
  • Plans and organizes Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners, Leadership Team, and other meetings.
  • Provides oversight and coordination in development and maintenance of division budgets and contracts; monitors federal funding levels to ensure compliance with established rules and grant requirements.
  • Manages development of proposed legislation and regulatory initiatives related to the Department’s mission and the Governor’s strategic priorities.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state and federal laws, regulations and requirements; evaluates impact of proposed legislation; formulates and implements policies, procedures and regulations in response to new statutory requirements; ensures the preparation and maintenance of mandated records and reports.
  • Conducts special analyses and writes comprehensive reports and recommendations; researches legislative proposals and prepares responses; drafts text and position statements; develops and modifies policy in response to legal mandates; serves on committees and attends a variety of meetings to represent the Department’s interests.
  • Reviews and responds to Public Records requests in accordance with applicable law.
