About The Position

The University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Community Standards and Accountability (CSA) upholds the University’s Code of Student Conduct and academic integrity policies, providing a fair and consistent process for addressing allegations of student misconduct. CSA investigates and resolves cases involving both academic and non-academic misconduct by graduate and undergraduate students, and works to foster a campus culture of accountability, integrity, and respect. The Deputy Director of Community Standards and Accountability reports to the Executive Director of CSA and is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of CSA’s case management function, including direct oversight of three full-time Investigators/Associate Directors. The Deputy Director hires and performance manage these staff, collaborates with the Executive Director on performance appraisals and expectations, and serves on the department’s Leadership Team alongside the Executive Director and the Deputy Director of Restorative Practices at Penn (RP@P), helping to integrate restorative practices into the department’s broader approach to case resolution. The Deputy Director provides regular feedback and guidance to Investigators/Associate Directors on case handling and approves day-to-day case resolutions. The Deputy Director also directly investigates and resolves allegations of academic and other misconduct, interviewing accused students, complainants, and witnesses; manages case-related communications and documentation; and represents CSA at formal disciplinary hearings through case completion. The Deputy Director works closely with the Executive Director to identify, implement, and document internal protocols and procedures for case handling, collaborates on strategic outreach and communication efforts, and acts as Director of CSA in the Executive Director’s absence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's and 5 to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required; J.D. or other terminal degree preferred.
  • Significant progressively responsible experience in student conduct, academic integrity, investigations, or a related field required, including experience conducting investigations and supervising professional staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive, confidential matters with sound judgment and discretion.
  • Strong interviewing, analytical, and case management skills required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Experience with restorative practices strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the day-to-day case management efforts of the three Case Managers/Investigators, including hiring and performance management; collaborate with the Exec. Director on performance appraisals and setting expectations;
  • Provide feedback and evaluation to Case Managers/Investigators regarding case handling; provide advice on appropriate sanctions, educational outcomes, and other resolutions; approve day-to-day case resolutions.
  • Investigate allegations of academic and other misconduct by graduate and undergraduate students, including interviewing accused students, complainants, and witnesses;
  • Manage case-related communications, including drafting documents and representing the office at formal disciplinary hearings, to see cases through to completion;
  • Identify and implement appropriate internal protocols and procedures for case handling; document procedures and review on an ongoing basis;
  • Serve as part of the department's Leadership Team, working with the Exec. Director and Deputy Director of Restorative Practices at Penn to integrate restorative practices, and collaborate as part of a team to develop strategic outreach and communication efforts;
  • Act as Director of the Center for Community Standards and Accountability in the Director's absence;
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
