About The Position

Under general direction, this upper management level position manages one or more of the following functions within the Community Development Department, including but not limited to: Current Planning, Long Range Planning, Neighborhood Services, Licensing, Mobility, Community Outreach, Building & Safety, Plan Review/Engineering, Field Inspections, Permit Services Center, Homeless Services, Housing Assistance, Housing Development and Preservation, Centralized Customer Service, Administration, and Development Concierge. Provides staff support to the City Council, Housing Authority, Commissions, Boards, and Committees as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in City or Urban Planning, Architecture, Engineering, Geography, Economics, Public or Business Administration or a related field is required.
  • Six years of comprehensive management-level experience in the field of community development or related disciplines is required.
  • This experience must include three years as a division or section head, including supervisory experience over a large, complex governmental organization similar to that of the City of Glendale.
  • A valid California Class C Driver’s License is required.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master's Degree in a related field is highly desirable.
  • Comprehensive Management experience in Long-Range Planning is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Manages one or more of the following functions within the Community Development Department: Current Planning, Long Range Planning, Neighborhood Services, Licensing, Mobility, Community Outreach, Building & Safety, Plan Review/Engineering, Field Inspections, Permit Services Center, Homeless Services, Housing Assistance, Housing Development and Preservation, Centralized Customer Service, Administration, and Development Concierge.
  • Provides staff support to the City Council, Housing Authority, Commissions, Boards, and Committees as required.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to all employees, customers, vendors and other City departments.
  • Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct.
  • Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period.
  • Work the necessary hours and times, including overtime as authorized for non-management staff, to complete goals, tasks, and objectives.
  • Ensure the duties of the position are performed in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Foster a teamwork environment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Give and receive direction in English.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Operate or use all position-related software, equipment and tools effectively and safely.
  • Actively participate in maintaining a secure computing environment by adhering to and implementing City cybersecurity policies, procedures, and best practices. This includes understanding common cyber threats such as phishing and malware, and promptly reporting suspicious activities.
