About The Position

This is an executive level professional position. The incumbent performs difficult and complex tasks to assist with the effective operation and management of the Community Corrections Department to include Local Probation, Pretrial Services, and the Adult Recovery Court Division. Operations for Local Probation and Pretrial Services are multijurisdictional and include all Hanover and Caroline Courts. The Deputy Director of Community Corrections reports to the Director of Community Corrections and manages the department’s operations and staff. The incumbent has indirect supervisory responsibility for all employees in the Department of Community Corrections and oversees the department in the absences of the Director.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the criminal justice system, community corrections, local systems and judicial procedures, required.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local guidelines, laws and regulations.
  • Must have the ability to manage several projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain confidentiality, required.
  • Ability to supervise staff, delegate tasks and manage department performance goals.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field required with a minimum of three (3) years related experience, including probation/pretrial case supervision, successful completion of Department of Criminal Justice Services CORE required, and one (1) year in a supervisory or management capacity – OR – Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable.
  • Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting
  • Must obtain valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of employment to be eligible to operate a county vehicle.
  • Twelve-month probationary period

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the recruitment and training of employees, performing related human resources and payroll functions
  • Assists in the financial operations of the department, including functional budget development, monitoring, and reporting requirements for state grant and county budget.
  • Responsible for assigning all new appropriate cases for supervision.
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures, to ensure compliance with all Department of Criminal Justice and Department of Judicial Services standards.
  • Performs quality assurance functions reviewing case files and violation reports to ensure effective, fair, and quality case management by probation/pretrial officers and adult recovery court cases.
  • Assist with Virginia Department of State Police and Department of Criminal Justice Services Audits.
  • Provides administrative support to the Community Criminal Justice Board and the Recovery Court Advisory Board.
  • Provides case management with overflow and high-profile cases.
  • Prepare reports and make presentations as needed.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
