About The Position

Charleston Southern University is seeking a Deputy Director of Campus Security who will report to the Director of Campus Security. This role involves assisting with the leadership and daily operations of the Campus Security Department and acting as the Director in their absence. The Deputy Director will supervise and train Campus Security personnel, support campus safety, emergency response, and crime prevention. A key aspect of this role is promoting a community policing approach focused on visibility, service, and building positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff. The position requires active participation in the campus community and collaboration with University departments to foster a safe and welcoming environment. This is an essential position that may require reporting during emergencies, severe weather, and special events.

Requirements

  • Minimum of seven years of law enforcement and/or campus security experience.
  • Must possess and maintain required South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) certification.
  • Must be a Level One SLED Instructor or obtain certification within four months of employment.
  • Must maintain First Aid, CPR, AED, weapons, and defensive tactics certifications as required.
  • Valid South Carolina driver's license required.
  • Strong leadership, communication, decision-making, and relationship-building skills.
  • Knowledge of community policing, emergency response, crime prevention, and campus safety practices.
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with students, faculty, staff, and external law enforcement agencies.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or a related field preferred.
  • Relevant education and professional experience may be considered.
  • Law enforcement experience and professional experience in a college or university setting strongly preferred.
  • Supervisory or leadership experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the daily leadership, supervision, scheduling, and training of Campus Security personnel.
  • Serve as Director of Campus Security in the Director's absence.
  • Promote community policing and positive relationships between Campus Security and students, faculty, and staff.
  • Maintain a visible presence on campus and engage with students outside of enforcement situations.
  • Collaborate with Student Life, Residence Life, Athletics, Facilities, and other campus partners regarding safety concerns and initiatives.
  • Respond to calls for service and investigate incidents as needed.
  • Coordinate emergency and law enforcement response and work with local and state agencies when appropriate.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness, campus emergency notifications, security systems, cameras, alarms, and access control.
  • Assist with security planning for University events, including traffic, parking, and crowd management.
  • Assist with Clery Act compliance, crime reporting, the Annual Security Report, and other required documentation.
  • Support departmental training, policy development, and officer professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Campus Security.
