About The Position

The Rockdale County Coroner’s Office is seeking an On-Call Deputy Coroner to assist with death investigations and related duties in coordination with the elected Coroner. Hours and schedule vary and are determined on a case-by-case basis, with assignments typically based on proximity to the incident or operational need. This role requires professionalism, discretion, and a willingness to respond outside normal business hours.

Requirements

  • Ability to handle deceased individuals and operate respectfully in emotionally difficult environments
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic legal and ethical standards related to death investigation, evidence handling, and confidentiality
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and compassionately with law enforcement, medical personnel, funeral home staff, and surviving family members
  • Ability to manage basic administrative tasks, such as submitting timesheets and maintaining documentation in compliance with county procedures
  • Ability to meet deadlines and respond promptly as part of a larger investigative network, including coordination with the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office, emergency personnel, and other local or state agencies involved in case resolution
  • Strong writing skills, including the ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports
  • Demonstrated organization and recordkeeping skills
  • Must be able to report for duty outside of standard hours when necessary
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Must be able to perform moderate physical work if necessary, including lifting a minimum of 50 pounds regularly. Duties require physical stamina and manual dexterity. Also must possess the ability to sit, stand, stretch, climb, bend, and walk for most of the workday
  • Basic computer proficiency, to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Must be willing to follow county policies, procedures, and departmental standards, including but not limited to demonstrating professional conduct, maintaining punctuality, showing a commitment to public service, and serving as a positive representative of Rockdale County as an organization
  • High School Diploma
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license and demonstrate a safe driving record in accordance with county insurance requirements
  • A Deputy Coroner must be certified or the ability to obtain certification by the Georgia Coroners Training Council.
  • They must complete the Basic Training course provided by the Georgia Police Academy before assuming duties—not after.
  • After completing the Basic course, the Deputy must submit certification to the Council to receive official recognition.
  • To maintain certification, Deputies must complete 24 hours of annual continuing training in approved courses.

Responsibilities

  • Responds promptly to death scenes as dispatched by local law enforcement or 911. Examines the scene, conducts preliminary investigations, photographs evidence, and determines if the death falls under the coroner’s jurisdiction. Coordinates scene access with law enforcement and first responders.
  • Confirms the identity of the decedent using available evidence, documentation, or contacts. Collects and documents pertinent information such as next of kin, medical history, medications, and known conditions. Prepares field notes and completes required case forms.
  • Assists in determining preliminary cause and manner of death based on observations, available records, and consultation with the Coroner. Ensures that appropriate death certificates are filed and legal documentation is submitted accurately and timely. Notifies or assists in notifying next of kin with professionalism and care.
  • Collaborates with hospitals, hospice facilities, law enforcement, EMS, funeral homes, and forensic pathologists during and after the investigation. Assists with autopsy coordination, toxicology transport, and release of remains when applicable.
  • Maintains accurate written records of all scene investigations, evidence collected, and interactions with partner agencies. Prepares case files for review and approval by the Coroner. May be required to testify in court or provide official documentation for legal or insurance matters.
  • Interacts respectfully with families during emotionally difficult times. Provides general information on the coroner’s process and refers families to funeral homes or appropriate agencies when requested.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as needed to assist the Rockdale County Coroner’s Office.
