About The Position

The Court Security Deputy is a Sworn member responsible for maintaining order and security of the Clay County Courthouse and its adjacent parking areas. This role ensures the safety of all occupants, including judges, court personnel, and citizens. Responsibilities include serving and executing court orders, managing court proceedings, and the care, custody, and control of inmates. The individual must respond to volatile circumstances professionally, demonstrating superior customer service and an understanding of human behavior. Skills in specialized equipment, techniques, and courtroom security procedures are essential. Court Security Deputies are cross-trained to perform duties of Administrative Building Security Deputy, Bailiff Deputy, and Bailiff Control Room Operator.

Requirements

  • High school degree or its equivalent required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office products.
  • Speak and understand the English language.
  • Basic law enforcement certification required (420 hours).
  • Successful completion of state exam.
  • Process a valid Driver’s License upon hire.
  • Maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all duties as outlined in the job description of a Deputy Sheriff.
  • Responds to all emergencies, incidents, or reported crimes in the courthouse, administration building, and adjacent parking areas.
  • Conducts security rounds in the courthouse to ensure safety and security.
  • Reviews daily roster assignments from the unit supervisor.
  • Prepares courtroom for daily judicial proceedings.
  • Arranges for additional inmates to appear before the judge if necessary.
  • Receives and escorts inmates from the Jail to holding cells before court.
  • Provides care, custody, and control of inmates/detainees attending court.
  • Controls, restrains, and subdues inmates/offenders/detainees using proper techniques and equipment.
  • Mediates and resolves disputes involving citizens, inmates, offenders, and detainees.
  • Controls the movement of parties/inmates appearing for courtroom proceedings.
  • Takes persons into custody as a result of criminal investigation or court orders.
  • Ensures fingerprints and/or DNA are taken as required.
  • Receives and escorts inmates from holding cells back to the Jail after court.
  • Responds to and coordinates responses to inmate injuries, complaints, and grievances.
  • Reports fights, disorders, or unusual activities to the supervisor.
  • Notifies designated persons immediately during an emergency situation.
  • Conducts a search of holding cells at the close of each day.
  • Oversees and monitors the safety and security of courthouse staff and members.
  • Assists clerks with obtaining signatures and distributing paperwork.
  • Ensures paperwork directed to the sheriff’s office is properly processed.
  • Provides security escorts throughout the Courthouse as needed.
  • Limits public access to the judicial chamber area.
  • Ensures proper check-in of appropriate parties prior to court session.
  • Prepares courtroom and jury room for jury trials.
  • Provides security, coordinates movement, and assists with the needs of the jury panel.
  • Maintains a courteous and professional attitude.
  • Keeps up with courthouse functions during each shift.
  • Ensures individual work areas are kept neat and orderly.
  • Maintains uniform according to policy.
  • Gives immediate detailed report/information regarding unauthorized penetrations/intrusions, security breaches, and escapes.
  • Participates in cross-training with co-workers and assists them when needed.
  • Reports identified or potential maintenance, safety, and/or non-compliance findings, hazards, and incidents.
  • Reports unusual or abnormal citizen/inmate/offender/detainee behaviors or physical conditions.
  • Responds to officer calls for assistance in the courthouse.
  • Timely completes all assignments, special projects, and budgetary requirements.
  • Adheres to leave and attendance policies, including punctual arrival and completing full shifts.
  • Informs the supervisor about illness or untimely incidents, reports overtime hours worked, and submits time sheets, attendance, and leave requests.
  • Regularly checks assigned mailbox, phone calls, PowerDMS, and email messages, responding promptly and professionally.
  • Makes the assigned chain of command aware of anything noteworthy.
  • Responds to supervision, guidance, direction, and feedback from executive staff and superiors.
  • Conducts themselves in a polite, helpful, courteous, ethical, and professional manner.
  • Cultivates positive working relationships with colleagues and other agency units.
  • Demonstrates an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences.
  • Actively participates in job-specific training.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
