About The Position

The Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney is one of the nation's largest municipal law offices, providing high-caliber legal services to the City of Los Angeles. The General Litigation Division specifically defends the City and its employees in civil tort litigation, focusing on wrongful death and personal injury claims, often involving dangerous conditions of public property or negligent conduct. The litigation primarily takes place in State Courts but may extend to surrounding counties or Federal Court. This role is crucial in defending the City through thoughtful, well-written, and well-researched law and motion practice.

Requirements

  • Licensed to practice law in all courts in the State of California.
  • Three years of civil litigation experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in negotiation of claims and lawsuits.
  • A sincere desire to vigorously defend the City through thoughtful, well written and well researched law and motion practice.
  • Strong oral communication, writing, and advocacy skills.
  • The ability to exercise sound judgment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in governmental tort litigation.
  • Familiarity with governmental immunities and defenses commonly applicable to governmental entities.
  • Experience in law and motion and/or appellate advocacy.
  • Knowledge of medical conditions and terminology.
  • Licensed to practice law in the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzing claims and lawsuits to provide advice and negotiate early settlements.
  • Conducting legal research and providing law and motion support.
  • Crafting dispositive motions, discovery motions, motions in limine, and post-trial motions.
  • Consulting with trial deputies, appellate attorneys, and management on legal and settlement strategy throughout the claim and trial process.
