About The Position

The University of Washington Police Department (UWPD) is seeking a Deputy Chief for Police Administration to lead its administrative functions. UWPD is an accredited public safety department responsible for campus safety, crime deterrence, investigation, dignitary protection, and managing large events. Reporting to the Chief of Police, the Deputy Chief will manage the Administrative Division, including Logistics and Planning, Information and Technology, and Internal Affairs. This role also involves liaison with external partners, continuous enforcement of laws, protection of life and property, and policy updates. As part of the senior leadership team, the Deputy Chief will assume command in the Chief's absence and be responsible for data-driven strategic goals in law enforcement administration. The position requires staying current with changing laws and community opinions and involves reviewing policy updates. This is a 100% onsite position located at the UW Police Department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum ten (10) years’ experience in progressively responsible law enforcement work, including considerable experience in a supervisor capacity in supervision and administration.
  • Must be a State of Washington commissioned officer or able to obtain commission status within 12 months of employment.
  • Must show a demonstrated interest in self-improvement by taking advantage of educational opportunities in new laws and innovations in law enforcement.
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of the principles and procedures of modern police science and administration.
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of all applicable local, state and federal laws.
  • Must possess demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, assign and supervise the work of a large number of subordinates engaged in a variety of police and related activities
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to change with ease and readily identify creative alternative solutions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public, city officials, governmental authorities and employees.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals both written and verbally.
  • Valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree desired
  • Graduate of the FBI National Academy or similar type executive training program
  • Experience in university policing
  • Knowledge of Clery and Title IX

Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs and manages the Administrative Division to include Logistics and Planning, Education and Training, Information and Technology, and Internal Affairs.
  • Provides leadership and management oversight for the entire department in the absence of the Director/Chief of Police.
  • Evaluates subordinate performance; participates in personnel actions such as appointments, promotions, demotions, discipline and scheduling.
  • Reviews crime trends; directs the development of personnel assigned to the Administrative Division, including supervision of education and training of department personnel.
  • Facilitates and coordinates the department’s recruitment process for new hires, and supports retention strategy.
  • Monitors department police administration by attending various meetings, observational review of subordinates, regularly reviews the schedules, timesheets, criminal reports, operational reports and other department activity reports for quality and approval.
  • Participates in labor/management negotiations and joint labor/management meetings.
  • Assists the Chief of Police and the executive leadership team in the development and control of the annual budget proposal in formulation and implementing police policy, procedures, rules, regulations and programs.
  • Supports identification and submission of grants and in seeking Department funding opportunities.
  • Fosters communications and cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, departments and personnel.
  • Participates in administrative On-Call rotation and respond to scenes of major crimes, emergency situations or other critical incidents, providing support or direction of activities as necessary.
  • Oversees and coordinates special projects as needed.
