About The Position

The University of Washington Police Department (UWPD) is an accredited public safety department responsible for the safety and security of the campus community. UWPD's duties include crime deterrence, reduction, and resolution; proactive crime prevention and problem-solving; investigations for prosecution; dignitary protection; and managing large crowds at events. Reporting to the Chief of Police, the Deputy Chief for Police Operations provides leadership and manages the department's operations and functions to ensure effective law enforcement and public safety services. This role oversees the Operations Division, including Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Security Services, and Quartermaster. The Deputy Chief also serves as a liaison to external partners and assumes command of the department in the Chief's absence, alongside the Deputy Chief for Police Administration. This position is 100% onsite and located at the UW Police Department building.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum ten (10) years of progressively responsible law enforcement work experience, including considerable experience in a supervisory capacity in supervision and administration.
  • Must be a State of Washington commissioned officer or able to obtain commission status within 12 months of employment.
  • Must show a demonstrated interest in self-improvement by taking advantage of educational opportunities in new laws and innovations in law enforcement.
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of the principles and procedures of modern police science and administration.
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of all applicable local, state, and federal laws.
  • Must possess demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, assign, and supervise the work of a large number of subordinates engaged in a variety of police and related activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to change with ease and readily identify creative alternative solutions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public, city officials, governmental authorities, and employees.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals both written and verbally.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of comprehensive background investigation, including Polygraph Examination, Psychological Evaluation, Fingerprinting, Drug Screen and Medical Examination.
  • No felony convictions and no pattern of misdemeanor convictions that could compromise access to confidential records.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, and manages the Operations Division, including Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Security Services, and Quartermaster.
  • Oversees the planning, scheduling, and assignment of work within Patrol Operations.
  • Supervises planning and operational logistics for large-scale Special Events.
  • Oversees the Security Operations Center (SOC) and security camera proposals on campus property.
  • Provides leadership and management oversight for the entire department in the absence of the Chief of Police, in partnership with the Deputy Chief for Operations.
  • Evaluates subordinate performance and participates in personnel actions such as appointments, promotions, demotions, discipline, and scheduling.
  • Reviews crime trends and directs the development of personnel assigned to the Operations Division, including supervision of education and training.
  • Reviews Department policies and procedures and develops, recommends, and implements methods, systems, and tools to increase Department efficiency.
  • Assists with community outreach efforts and special projects.
  • Serves as designated Public Information Officer (PIO) and coordinates press releases in collaboration with Command Staff and the Division of Strategic & Crisis Communications.
  • Fosters communications and cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, departments, and personnel.
  • Facilitates information and statistics used in the creation of reports with an emphasis on supporting the department’s mission statement, policies, procedures, and organizational assessment.
  • Monitors department police operational matters by attending meetings, serving on committees, and observational review of subordinates.
  • Regularly reviews schedules, timesheets, criminal reports, operational reports, and other department activity reports for quality and approval.
  • Participates in administrative On-Call rotation and responds to scenes of major crimes, emergency situations, or other critical incidents, providing support or direction.
  • Oversees and coordinates special projects and other duties as assigned, including review of use of force investigations, complaints involving department members, and collision investigations.
  • Manages 3 employees (3.0 FTE).
  • Performs essential services and may be required to work during any period of declared suspended operation.
