About The Position

NYC Parks serves as the steward for over 30,000 acres of land, which includes 1,000 playgrounds, 36 recreation centers, 66 pools and 14 miles of beach. Our primary responsibility is to build and maintain clean, safe and accessible parks, and to create cultural and educational programs for New Yorkers of all ages to enjoy. The mission of Recreation is to enable all New Yorkers to lead physically active and intellectually stimulating lives through sports, fitness, outdoor adventure, technology, education, and the arts. Recreation programs include specialized exercise classes, youth sports, senior activities, summer camps and free afterschool programs. Recreation programming occurs throughout the City in NYC Parks recreation centers, parks and playgrounds. The approximately 65,000 square feet Mary Cali Dalton Recreation Center will be a state-of the art community hub, offering a host of programming options and amenities to encourage learning, recreation, and fitness. The center will feature a gymnasium, fitness rooms, and multi-purpose rooms that will host a variety of Afterschool, Summer Camp, Robotics, and Arts & Cultural programs.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, and one year of satisfactory, full-time experience in recreation leadership; or
  • An associate degree from an accredited college and three years of satisfactory, full-time experience in recreation leadership; or
  • A high school diploma, or its equivalent, and five years of satisfactory, full-time experience in recreation leadership; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. Experience may be substituted for undergraduate education on the basis of one year of satisfactory, full-time experience equates to 30 semester credits from an accredited college or university. However, all candidates must possess at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and at least one year of satisfactory, full-time experience as described in “1” above.

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision of the Center Manager, develop, plan and implement recreation activities.
  • Assist in the day-to-day management and operations of a recreation center.
  • Use initiative and creative problem solving to manage resources effectively.
  • Participate in the development and management of programs including sports, fitness, outdoor adventure, after school/educational activities, performance arts, teen workshops and summer camp.
  • Work with partner organizations and agencies to provide programming.
  • Supervise recreation and operations staff, alternative workforce and volunteers.
  • Represent the Center Manager in community outreach, fundraising and marketing efforts.
  • Work with the Center Manager in the creation of comprehensive presentations to community organizations, partnership groups and public officials.
  • Oversee the immediate correction of safety hazards and precautions related to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), automated external defibrillator and other similar concerns.
  • Track financials, data and produce reports relating to program records, attendance and timesheets.
  • Use applications/software such as Xplor Recreation, AMPS, and Excel to effectively track membership, out-of-service equipment, attendance, etc.

Benefits

  • Appointees to this position will receive an assignment differential of $1,030 in addition to their base salary.
