The Appeals Division of the Indiana Attorney General’s Office represents the State, its agencies, officers, employees, and interests before state and federal appellate courts in civil and criminal cases. It also represents the State in certain state trial court post-conviction and habeas corpus actions and in federal district court habeas proceedings. The Division works to uphold criminal judgments and represents agencies in appeals from state trial court and federal district court decisions. The Deputy Attorney General will join the Capital and Habeas Litigation Section and handle cases across the Appeals Division’s practice areas. The Section develops a hybrid civil and criminal practice, with a focus on state and federal post-conviction litigation, including federal habeas challenges to convictions and state habeas and post-conviction cases involving parole revocation and sentence calculations. The caseload may also include criminal direct appeals, child services appeals, and other civil appeals. Although the Capital Litigation Team is housed in the Section, involvement in death-penalty litigation is neither required nor expected unless the attorney is fully willing and already has significant experience in that area. The role may require travel within and outside Indiana. The State of Indiana’s Office of the Attorney General offers a hybrid work model with the possibility of working remotely two days per week. The annual salary range is $84,256.74 to $115,217.00.
