About The Position

The Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) San Diego is seeking clinical counselors to serve as Deployed Resiliency Counselors (DRCs). The DRC is a credentialed clinical counselor assigned to a Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carrier (CVN) or Large Deck Amphibious Assault Ship/Landing Helicopter Assault Ship (LHD/LHA), providing support to deployed forces in port and at sea throughout the ship’s lifecycle, including pier-side periods, shipyard maintenance, workups, and deployments. Success in the role depends on embedding effectively within the command and working in a shipboard environment. The DRC provides short-term, solution-focused individual and group counseling for commonly occurring life situations, and education on resiliency and wellness topics. The position supports crew readiness through engagement in resiliency programs and participation in Command Resiliency Team (CRT) initiatives. The DRC serves as a liaison to the homeport Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC), providing immediate sexual assault response and coordination. The DRC also serves as a liaison to the homeport Family Advocacy Program (FAP), providing safety assessments, safety planning, triage, and treatment related to allegations of child or domestic abuse. The role assesses and triages clients at risk of harm to themselves or others and refers them to the nearest behavioral health provider. Cases can involve complex family problems, dual diagnoses, violence, impulsivity, suicidal or homicidal ideation or attempts, and other mental health concerns. The DRC provides Sailor Assistance and Intercept for Life (SAIL) case management, including assessment, safety planning, and care coordination for active-duty personnel with suicide-related behavior. The incumbent must deploy at sea aboard U.S. Navy ships and may be required to travel or provide homeport services during crises and disasters. The shipboard environment entails limitations on privacy and activities. At sea, the incumbent shares a stateroom in officer berthing and joins the Officers’ Mess as a paying member, with meals purchased through monthly billing. The position may require on-call duty outside normal work hours. A physical examination is required upon entry to duty and annually thereafter, and the incumbent must remain physically fit for shipboard duty. Additional compensatory time off may be approved based on deployment length.
