About The Position

Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) is a major player in the steel industry, recognized for its leadership and corporate governance. The Long Products Division, specifically Steel of West Virginia, is seeking a Department Safety Coordinator. This role is crucial for promoting SDI's core value of safety through visible leadership and direct interaction with employees. The coordinator will serve as a key resource for managers and supervisors, addressing daily safety issues, identifying potential hazards, and ensuring consistent safety messaging across the plant. This position also involves managing safety-related administrative tasks, responding to emergencies, tracking incidents, and facilitating safety training for new hires and contractors. A significant part of the role includes collaborating with other departments, such as electrical and engineering, to implement safety improvements and developing department-specific orientations.

Requirements

College degree or safety experience in an oriented field.
Experience in an industrial manufacturing environment preferred.
Safety awareness and understanding.
Observant, attention to details and accuracy.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Advanced problem-solving and creative thinking skills.
Ability to work with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

Provide visibility and availability for face-to-face interactions with hourly employees, demonstrating SDI's number 1 Core Value.
Serve as a resource for Department Managers and Supervisors to solve day-to-day safety issues, proactively identify exposures, and handle other safety concerns.
Attend plant meetings to support Department Managers and Supervisors in all "Take Control of Safety" initiatives with a consistent message to all employees.
Act as a liaison between other departments to maintain consistency in the approach to "Take Control of Safety".
Attend seminars and conventions to bring back new safety technology to the division.
Manage departmental safety clerical checks (crane reports, mobile equipment certifications, scheduling trainings, etc.) and filing per OSHA requirements.
Respond to any emergencies and track incident reports, safety alerts, and initiate drafts in Intelex.
Track and report on employee training, JSAs/PSIFs, and other safety requirements.
Train contractors and new hires on safety programs and culture.
Identify true safety concerns and track progress towards safer conditions, working with electrical and engineering to accomplish these improvements and reporting back to the Company.
Develop and train a department-specific orientation for new hires.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
