About The Position

The Production Department Manager leads day-to-day operations within an assigned production area to ensure work is executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with established production goals and customer requirements. This role oversees departmental performance, supports employee development and accountability, and reinforces quality and safety standards while collaborating with Operations leadership to maintain consistent production flow and continuous improvement.

  • Assess and prioritize department-level training needs in partnership with Team Leaders based on skill gaps, quality trends, and operational demands.
  • Deliver ongoing production training and retraining, including safety procedures, documentation requirements, and quality standards, reinforcing established operational and compliance expectations.
  • Oversee structured onboarding programs to ensure new hires achieve proficiency in production processes and understand role expectations, conducting milestone check-ins to support successful integration.
  • Support cross-training initiatives in collaboration with other Production Department Managers to expand workforce versatility and improve departmental coverage.
  • Align daily production activities with established production goals and job priorities by reviewing job reports and collaborating with the Scheduler and Team Leaders to assign work, adjusting assignments as priorities or staffing change to maintain consistent workflow.
  • Monitor production performance and workflow execution using ERP and reporting systems to ensure accurate labor tracking, proper job scanning, adherence to time standards, and correct departmental flow.
  • Partner with Team Leaders to oversee real-time work performance, reallocating personnel as needed to maintain productivity and workflow continuity.
  • Coordinate material availability and movement with Inventory and Material Handling to secure required production materials and communicate shortages or damaged inventory to appropriate leadership to prevent workflow disruption.
  • Ensure department-level equipment readiness by coordinating with Maintenance, addressing tooling issues, and overseeing machine setup and calibration to support production accuracy.
  • Collaborate with other Production Department Managers to align workflows and share staffing and material resources to sustain production continuity within established operational plans.
  • Communicate production status, priorities, and constraints through regular leadership meetings and escalate operational risks or resource constraints to the Operations Manager as needed.
  • Provide hands-on production support for high-priority or complex work to ensure timely and accurate completion.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for direct reports, incorporating Team Leader input and obtaining Production Manager approval.
  • Lead performance improvement conversations, develop and implement corrective action plans in partnership with the Production Manager, and escalate unresolved issues to HR.
  • Oversee employee timekeeping and attendance processes, approving timecards and time-off requests to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing and appropriate staffing coverage.
  • Support recruitment efforts by participating in interviews and collaborating with HR on candidate selection decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Reinforce workplace safety standards and ensure adherence to established procedures, addressing facility concerns and ensuring proper injury reporting and documentation.
  • Execute department-level quality control and corrective action processes, documenting nonconformances, coordinating remediation efforts, and implementing improvements in alignment with organizational quality standards.
  • Collaborate with Quality to address process deviations and implement preventative measures, supporting continuous improvement initiatives led by Operations leadership.
  • Coordinate with Quality to verify equipment calibration and confirm production readiness prior to or during operation.
  • Escalate specification discrepancies to the Design Department and coordinate clarification to ensure customer-specific requirements are accurately interpreted and executed within the department.
