About The Position

The Department Manager 2 manages Juvenile Detention staff at the Wayne County Detention Facility and is responsible for the facility’s day-to-day operations during business and non-business hours, including holidays and weekends. The role provides leadership and oversight of staff, youth programming, facility operations, safety, and security. The manager also oversees operational posts and responds to staffing challenges, crises, and emergencies.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Criminal Justice, Psychology, or a related field.
Three years of experience in a secure correctional setting or child-caring institution.
One year of supervisory experience.
Valid State of Michigan driver’s license and an acceptable, safe driving record.
Must be cleared by Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), Child Protective Services, to work in a child-caring institution. Candidates who have lived outside Michigan must obtain clearance from that state.

Responsibilities

Provide leadership to Juvenile Detention Specialist (JDS) staff.
Oversee and develop plans for pod management, residential care, and youth programming.
Oversee Operations Shift Assignment Schedules for JDS Supervisors and Juvenile Detention Specialist staff.
Review and approve log books and other operational reports reviewed or completed by JDS Supervisors.
Train and evaluate Juvenile Detention Specialists.
Plan, supervise, and coordinate day-to-day operations, including crisis intervention, confinements, lockdowns, staffing shortages, and Temporary Disaster Plans.
Supervise and provide day-to-day direction and training to JDS Supervisors.
Communicate effectively with facility staff, supervisors, administrators, management, residents, outside agencies, and community groups.
Maintain current knowledge of services available to assist and educate staff in rehabilitating juveniles and providing detention care.
Manage the building during non-business hours, ensuring efficient staff operations while maintaining safety and security.
Conduct departmental investigations, issue disciplinary actions, and develop training and Corrective Action Plans for operations staff.
Provide direct oversight and management of operational posts, including Master Control, Intake, Admissions, Classification, Transportation, Key Control, Visitation, Medical, and identified Specialized Housing Pods.
Conduct facility rounds to check security, including cameras, doors, and juvenile counts.
Complete and submit daily shift reports.
Transport juvenile residents in a County vehicle to and from appointments or for emergencies as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
