About The Position

In Charleston, West Virginia, we're looking for a Department Manager, Mechanical Engineering to lead and grow our Mechanical Engineering team while supporting the successful delivery of projects for our customers across the energy, chemicals and resources sectors. This role combines people leadership, technical excellence, project delivery oversight, operational management and business growth. You'll work closely with customers, project teams and office leadership to build team capability, drive engineering excellence and deliver successful outcomes.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution
Typically 15+ years of relevant engineering experience within energy, chemicals, resources, industrial, infrastructure or related sectors
Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams, discipline groups or major project scopes
Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, industry codes, standards and best practices
Experience supporting multidisciplinary project delivery in consulting, EPC or EPCM environments
Strong leadership, communication and relationship-building skills
Proven ability to mentor and develop technical professionals
Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving capabilities
Commercial awareness and experience supporting project budgets, staffing forecasts and delivery performance
Proficiency with engineering and business software applications

Nice To Haves

Professional Engineer (PE) registration or equivalent professional licensure
Previous experience in a department management, discipline management or engineering management role
Experience supporting customer engagement, proposals and business development activities
Familiarity with AI-enabled delivery, digital engineering and data-centric engineering environments
Experience working across multidisciplinary engineering projects
Active participation in professional engineering organizations
Willingness to travel and support project or site assignments as needed

Responsibilities

Lead the mechanical engineering department
Lead and develop the Mechanical Engineering team, creating an environment where people can grow, contribute and perform at their best
Support departmental planning, resource forecasting and operational priorities
Drive consistency in engineering execution, processes and quality standards
Identify risks, opportunities and improvement initiatives and work with leadership to address them

Lead workforce planning and resource allocation activities
Support recruitment, onboarding and succession planning initiatives
Mentor, coach and develop engineers and designers across all career stages

Support project delivery
Partner with project managers and discipline leaders to deliver safe, high-quality outcomes
Support management of project scope, schedule, budget and resources
Monitor project performance and address issues that may affect successful delivery
Support project risk identification, mitigation and escalation activities
Review and approve technical deliverables as required
Collaborate with project teams to meet customer expectations and business objectives
Drive technical excellence
Champion sound engineering practice and technical excellence across the department
Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, regulations and customer requirements
Encourage consistency and standardization in engineering calculations, specifications, studies and reports
Promote knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across project teams
Support technical reviews, audits and quality initiatives
Encourage adoption of digital engineering tools and data-centric ways of working
