This full-time position provides routine and emergency dental care, assessment, diagnosis and treatment to offenders incarcerated in the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC). This position is responsible for applying agency and professional treatment standards to develop individual patient treatment plans, diagnosing and treating dental disease of offenders or referring offenders to specialists for treatment. This position may be required to participate in restraining an offender primarily for medical reasons. The role involves communicating with outside providers and internal peers to ensure continuity of care, collaborating with other health care professionals and clinical services staff regarding offender health issues/policies, transfers, classifications and medical legal concerns. The position also participates in various decision-making committees to resolve system issues and assists in developing policies, protocols, standards, or guidelines. Maintaining offender health records, responding to offender grievances, and participating in daily dental clinic operations including tool control, chemical control, infection control practices, biohazardous waste, hazardous materials, and radiation control exposure control regulations are key responsibilities. The role includes planning workloads and schedules, maintaining agency compliance with relevant statutes and professional standards in dentistry, providing input to supervisors on dental unit policies and procedures, dental treatment standards, and dental unit budgetary and staffing needs. Additionally, the position provides clinical guidance, direction, consultation, and education relative to dental assistants' performance, supervision of clinical tasks and procedures as required under the Dental Practice Law, and daily guidance to dental care staff for efficiency. The Dentist also performs dental patient education related to preventative care and self-care.
