About The Position

This full-time position provides routine and emergency dental care, assessment, diagnosis and treatment to offenders incarcerated in the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC). This position is responsible for applying agency and professional treatment standards to develop individual patient treatment plans, diagnosing and treating dental disease of offenders or referring offenders to specialists for treatment. This position may be required to participate in restraining an offender primarily for medical reasons. The role involves communicating with outside providers and internal peers to ensure continuity of care, collaborating with other health care professionals and clinical services staff regarding offender health issues/policies, transfers, classifications and medical legal concerns. The position also participates in various decision-making committees to resolve system issues and assists in developing policies, protocols, standards, or guidelines. Maintaining offender health records, responding to offender grievances, and participating in daily dental clinic operations including tool control, chemical control, infection control practices, biohazardous waste, hazardous materials, and radiation control exposure control regulations are key responsibilities. The role includes planning workloads and schedules, maintaining agency compliance with relevant statutes and professional standards in dentistry, providing input to supervisors on dental unit policies and procedures, dental treatment standards, and dental unit budgetary and staffing needs. Additionally, the position provides clinical guidance, direction, consultation, and education relative to dental assistants' performance, supervision of clinical tasks and procedures as required under the Dental Practice Law, and daily guidance to dental care staff for efficiency. The Dentist also performs dental patient education related to preventative care and self-care.

Requirements

• Possess a current, valid Dentist license issued by the Colorado Dental Board.
• Possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must be 21 years of age.
• Ability to provide dental care to offenders incarcerated in a correctional facility.
• Advanced knowledge and a thorough understanding of Dental standards and guidelines.
• Commitment to patient care that is team-oriented.

• Ability to read and comprehend the English language.
• Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.

• Successfully pass all modules of the 6 week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics.
• Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics.
• Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist.
• Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down.
• Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows.
• Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows.
• Swing a baton in a striking technique.
• Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic.
• Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions.
• Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment.
• Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security.
• Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury.
• Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently.
• Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional diagnosis and treatment of oral pathology for offenders in both routine and emergency settings.
• Provide dental care that includes, but is not limited to, diagnostic, preventive, restorative, periodontal, endodontal, oral surgery, and prosthetic services.

• Plan workloads and schedules, as well as those of any subordinates.
• Maintain agency compliance with relevant statutes and professional standards in dentistry.
• Provide input to supervisors on dental unit policies and procedures, dental treatment standards, and dental unit budgetary and staffing needs.
• Provides clinical guidance and direction, consultation and education relative to dental assistants' performance.
• Provide supervision of clinical tasks and procedures as required under the Dental Practice Law.
• Provide daily guidance to the dental care staff for kite log entry and offender appointment scheduling to achieve maximum efficiency in providing dental treatment.
• Perform dental patient education related to preventative care and self care including appropriate hygiene, post dental procedure care, signs and symptoms of dental and periodontal disease and signs and symptoms of the need for immediate health dental care.
