Requirements

  • Must have graduated from an accredited school of dental hygiene.
  • Current and unrestricted license to practice Dental Hygiene in the State of Ohio.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the oral health management of all dental patients.
  • Obtains baseline oral hygiene assessment data based upon accepted principles of oral hygiene and periodontal care.
  • Records treatment as they occur in the patient’s dental record so that the dental record accurately and completely reflects the nature of the contact, the condition of the patient and the care or treatment provided.
  • Provides oral health education and appropriate individual counseling for all HPWO patients.
  • Integrates appropriate patient oral hygiene care with other health care professionals involved in the patient’s health care management.
  • Organizes and performs preventive oral health presentations at on-site and off-site locations.
  • Assists in the provision of technical assistance and health education in the community as requested.
  • Actively participates in Quality Improvement activities and serves on committees as assigned.
  • Performs independent procedures as delegated and directed by a dentist in accordance with state regulations and law as well as HPWO Dental policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the maintenance of all Dental Department areas in compliance with directives and policies as well as HPWO policies related to infection control, exposure control, and safety issues.
  • Receives and places necessary telephone calls consistent with professional matters, clinical business, and patient care.
  • Assists with various clinical and administrative functions as directed Supervisor.
  • Insures the proper disposal of all contaminated or potentially contaminated materials in accordance with HPWO policy as well as state and federal regulations.
  • Travels when necessary to meet operational needs.
  • As directed by the Supervisor, performs other related and/or necessary tasks to achieve organizational and programmatic goals and objectives.
  • Adheres to the standards and policies of the Organizational Privacy/Security and Compliance Programs, including the duty to comply with applicable laws and regulations (HIPAA, OSHA, OIG guidelines, other State and Federal laws). This also includes reporting to the Board of Directors, Compliance Officer, Privacy Officer, supervisor, or suggestion box, any suspected unethical, fraudulent, or unlawful acts or practices.
  • Prepare operatory for patient treatment.
  • Disinfects and sterilizes operatory after patient treatment is completed.
  • Assists with direct patient care procedures and related tasks; checks in patients, assists in obtaining patient histories, takes oral x-rays, prepares charts, and performs Dental Hygiene duties in accordance with State law and HPWO Policies.
  • Maintains stocks of medicines and dental supplies as necessary.
  • Assists receptionist(s) with front office duties as necessary.
  • Educates and advises patients on specified dental issues within established parameters.
  • Sterilizes instruments according to procedure.
  • Performs control procedures on all equipment to ensure equipment is functioning properly.
  • Schedules and monitors patient appointments and may coordinate routine office activities and administrative functions in support of unit activities.
  • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  • May supervise student employees in specified tasks.
  • Follows all protocols, HIPAA, OSHA, safety, infection control, and biohazard standards while performing all duties.
