About The Position

Family Health Centers at NYU Langone, a designated Level 3 Medical Home, is the largest federally qualified health center network in New York State, and the second largest in the nation. It includes eight primary care sites, 40 school-based health centers and dental clinics, four day care centers, the nation's largest dental residency program, and New York State's largest behavioral health program. The network also includes 12 community medicine sites providing care to disenfranchised New Yorkers, comprehensive HIV services, chemical dependency programs, and a family support center that offers educational, vocational, and other social support programs. The Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) provides preventive dental services, education and treatment for the patients of Dental School Health Program network as well as perform duties at the FHC sites (as needed) and participates in educational programs in the community. The RDH will float between dental school health and FHC site locations based on operational needs. FHC scheduled hours for the Registered Dental Hygienist may fluctuate based on operational needs. He/she performs expanded functions as allowed by state law.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain clinical recall system
  • Participate in the Dental Department Quality Assurance/Chart Audit Program.
  • Adhere to hospital, health center and department policies and procedures.
  • Provide chairside assistance to the dentist when necessary and aid in triage of emergency dental patients.
  • Complete the dental record clearly, accurately and timely.
  • Expose, develop, and mount radiographs properly.
  • Maintain hygiene operatory in an organized and clean fashion, assuring that appropriate instruments are available.
  • Apply topical fluoride treatment and pit and fissure sealants.
  • Assists the dentists in filling out charts accurately and processing patients forms and records. Facilitate the patient reappointment process.
  • Provides oral hygiene instructions through individual patient health education which includes: dental caries prevention, proper tooth brushing and flossing techniques, and nutritional guidance.
  • Provides oral prophylaxis and scaling of teeth with cavitron and hand instruments.
  • Evaluate patients oral hygiene and dental health and make preventive dental recommendations.
  • Participates in patient education programs in the community.
